Since Frank Baumann announced his departure as managing director of football at Werder Bremen, Clemens Fritz has been considered his successor.
Now the supervisory board has cleared the way.
Bremen - Bundesliga club Werder Bremen has promoted Clemens Fritz and appointed him managing director of football.
The 43-year-old former professional will succeed Frank Baumann in the summer.
The supervisory board decided this, the association announced on Thursday.
The “Bild” and the “Deichstube” first reported on the personnel.
The 48-year-old Baumann announced in November that he would be stepping down from his position at the end of the season.
Fritz is currently the head of professional football at Bremen and was considered the favorite for the managing director position after Baumann's departure announcement.
However, Werder also looked at candidates outside the club.
“In the end, Clemens was able to convince us with his strategy and approach in several rounds of discussions and thus prevailed against the strong competitors,” the chairman of the supervisory board, Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, was quoted as saying in the club’s statement.
Fritz thanked the supervisory board for their trust and Baumann for their cooperation.
“I have been able to work closely with Frank Baumann over the last six years and become increasingly involved in the sporting field,” he said.
He is looking forward to the new task, is very motivated and has the necessary respect for this challenge.
Baumann has been working in management in various positions at the Bremen company since 2010.
He has been managing director of football since May 2016.
His successor Fritz was initially active in the scouting department and has been head of professional football since 2020.
Both Baumann and Fritz were captains of the professional team for many years.
Baumann remains connected to the club.
In January it became known that, together with a regional alliance of entrepreneurs, he was taking over shares in the club's spun-off corporation for 38 million euros.
