Munich – In the past few weeks, the weather in February has been record-breakingly mild in Austria.
Some ski areas have already had to close due to lack of snow.

Massive onset of winter in Austria – up to 100 centimeters of fresh snow in the Alps
The winter comeback was already announced in the weather models for Friday (February 23rd).
According to the current forecast, a cold front will move in from the west on Friday night.
“An Italian low brings longer-lasting and extensive rainfall, snowfall sinking to low altitudes at higher intensities.
25 to 50 centimeters of new snow, in some cases significantly more on the mountain in the southern dam,” GeoSphere summarizes the weather situation.
The snowfall limit drops to 600 meters along the northern side of the Alps with heavy rainfall in the southwest, otherwise it is between 1000 and 1500 meters.

Snow hotspots in Austria – civil protection warns of new snow in Tyrol
The main affected areas are the Lienz district with a focus on the Tyrolean Gailtal, Drautal and the higher valleys (Villgraten, Defereggen, Virgen, Tauernsüdportal) as well as the Brenner region and the upper Wipptal.
Up to half a meter of fresh snow can fall here in a very short time.
According to current weather maps, 15 to 30 centimeters of snow is expected in the remaining parts of Tyrol.
“We are used to snow in Tyrol - but we still need to be careful.
Due to the amount of fresh snow, there is an increased risk of accidents on snowy roads.
In addition, branches can break due to the wet, heavy snow.
Therefore, special attention must be paid in forests, parks and avenues.
