Katharina Schulze calls on the “silent majority” in Wolfratshausen to be loud.

A tough approach - and education - helps against extremists.

Wolfratshausen – People across Germany are protesting against burgeoning right-wing extremism.

A procession of 350 people recently paraded through Wolfratshausen with candles and lanterns.

For Katharina Schulze, participants in the democracy demos are “the silent majority” who no longer want to remain silent in the face of an impending threat to the constitutional state.

The parliamentary group spokeswoman for the Greens in the Bavarian state parliament was a guest at the Waldram bathhouse on Thursday.

The topic of the local association's well-attended discussion evening: “Strengthening democracy.” One of Schulze's favorite topics, as quickly became clear given the politician's passionate appeal.

“There are more of us who want to defend democracy,” said the 38-year-old.

This can be seen, for example, in an unusual collaboration in the state parliament, where “the CSU sometimes joins forces with the Greens, just like the SPD and the Free Voters” in order to “fill with life” the much-quoted firewall against right-wing extremism - and against it to represent the partly right-wing extremist AfD.

Many people would already do this outside of parliament: “We have to be louder.

We’re noticing that now,” said Schulze.

Seeing how many people across Bavaria and Germany are campaigning on the streets to preserve democracy “gives me strength,” said Schulze.

Katharina Schulze: “You are bombarded with insults on the Internet”

Bavaria's Green Party frontwoman is known for energetic performances.

At times she became quieter and more thoughtful in the bathhouse.

For example, when she spoke of the “gift” that is democracy.

The visitors in the packed attic of the documentation center had many questions.

How Schulze endures so-called shitstorms.

As a woman who advocates for feminism, against right-wing extremism and racism, “you are bombarded with insults on the internet.” A lesson she had to learn.

“During the first shitstorm, I didn’t know which way was up and down.” Schulze renewed her call for a virtual police station in the bathhouse.

“If a woman receives a rape threat online at 11:51 p.m., she must be able to report it directly at 11:52 p.m.” – instead of having to go to a local inspection first.

The Greens called for more repression against enemies of democracy.

“I consciously say this as a Green Party: we will not push back extremists with a circle of chairs alone.”

As a preventative measure, there should be more educational opportunities on democracy – for all age groups.

An example of what every single citizen can achieve is the venue itself: Schulze praised the commitment of the bathhouse association, which created the memorial site.

“It shows what’s possible.”
