The top-class specialist conference “Gaißacher Tage” deals with chronic illnesses in children.

The head of the Gaißach specialist clinic, Prof. Josef Rosenecker, also relies on vaccinations for prevention.

Gaißach

- It is a traditional and renowned event that will take place from this Friday to Sunday, February 25th, in the Gaißach specialist clinic: the 33rd “Gaißach Days”.

The focus of this year's paediatrics conference is the care of chronically ill children.

The scientific direction is the former head of the clinic, Prof. Carl Peter Bauer, and - for the first time this year - Prof. Josef Rosenecker, who took over the position of medical director in January.

In the interview, Rosenecker gives an outlook on his premiere at the “Gaißacher Tage”.

Prof. Rosenecker, how do you look forward to the first “Gaißach days” under your leadership?

Fortunately, I can rely on the fact that this is an already established specialist conference.

There will be top-class lectures that I am looking forward to.

For example, we have as guests Prof. Julia Hauer, the chief physician of the children's clinic at the TU Munich in Schwabing, the former chief physician of the children's clinic, Prof. Stefan Burdach, and the director of the Haunerschen Children's Hospital at the LMU, Prof. Christoph Klein.

The conference will be very well attended; we have around 300 registrations from doctors and medical assistants as well as representatives from 25 companies.

Why is the focus this year on chronic illnesses in children?

This topic is obvious because as a specialist clinic we specialize in rehabilitation treatments in children and we deal with many chronic illnesses.

These include, for example, diabetes, bronchial asthma, but also congenital metabolic diseases.

In your opinion, are chronic diseases increasing among children and young people?

When it comes to childhood obesity, you can clearly say that; the phenomenon is visible in everyday life.

The morbid obesity then leads to other chronic illnesses.

I would be cautious about making a statement about other illnesses.

There is debate as to whether allergies are increasing in children.

But the question arises as to whether many people used to suffer from it but didn't go to the doctor about it and whether asthma has become a kind of fashionable diagnosis.

In addition, it has recently been possible to diagnose new diseases, such as non-specific back and groin pain and joint problems in children, which previously could not be clearly understood.

Prevention of chronic diseases in children

How can chronic illnesses be counteracted?

We attach great importance to prevention.

We want to prevent chronic diseases from increasing in children.

There will also be very interesting lectures on this at the “Gaißach Days”.

For example, it will be about vaccinations against RSV

(a pathogen that causes respiratory diseases, editor's note)

or influenza, but prevention of childhood cancer is also possible, namely through the HPV vaccination.

In the area of allergies, hyposensitization is a way to avoid the so-called floor change, i.e. the development of asthma.

And when it comes to diabetes, care for those affected has become much better, for example through the development of new insulin pumps.

After your first experiences at the Gaißach specialist clinic: How strong is the need for rehabilitation stays for children?

Compared to rehab for adults, rehab for children is a small area.

In Germany there are 50,000 rehabilitation services for children per year.

Compared to the existing chronic illnesses in children, this is a small number; there is still a lot of need.

Then the Gaißach specialist clinic must be in high demand.

In some areas we have long waiting times.

There is a great need nationwide, particularly for those with language development disorders.

Those affected sometimes have to wait a year for a place.

In the area of obesity, however, it can be observed that many children and young people are less accepting of going to a clinic for four weeks.

You can't party until midnight in rehab

Why?

Many people shy away from a structured process and the restrictions.

During rehab you can't party until midnight, play video games or post something on Instagram, so you have to be considerate.

And parents are also less willing to send a twelve-year-old to rehab unaccompanied, for example.

Something like this is an important step towards becoming self-employed.

We also see this as our mission.
