A 17-year-old student, Mohtadi Doukhani, died after being hit this morning just before 8am by a lorry, whose driver then ran away after the accident and was subsequently stopped.
It happened in Bussana, a hamlet of Sanremo.
The boy was in the company of his 15-year-old sister, Manar Doukhani, 15, and was walking along the wall when the vehicle hit them both.
The girl was transferred to the Pietra Ligure hospital due to the numerous and very serious polytraumas reported.
The two brothers, of Maghrebi origins, lived in the small town of the upper Argentina Valley.
The man, tracked down by the police thanks to the descriptions of the truck provided by a witness, had just finished delivering the goods to a local company.
He told the police that he hadn't noticed anything.
The truck was seized and the driver transferred to hospital for the necessary medical tests.
The mayor: "I have no words, we are close to the family"
"There are no words. We are close to the family in this moment of tragedy."
Speaking is the mayor of Triora Massimo Di Fazio.
"I will certainly proclaim the city's mourning - continues Di Fazio -. Theirs is a model family of integration. When I heard of the tragedy, I was in a meeting. I had already heard before the accident, but only afterwards did I find out that it was the two boys".
The young victim's father works in the Triora psychiatric hospital and is highly respected.
