The Wörthsee Triathlon has existed for 38 years.

Although it was co-organized by volunteers from the community and founded by a Wörthseer, it was considered a child of the Munich Funkstreife association.

That's different this year.

Maximilian Krumm from Walchstadt and his Sport & Lebensfreude GmbH are responsible.

- Around 820 athletes who bravely plunge into the waters of the Wörthsee, then take to the track on their bikes and finally run for the best times: the Wörthsee triathlon is a big and colorful spectacle every year.

This year it will take place on July 28, 2024.

The local council approved the implementation at its meeting on Wednesday.

However, organizationally the competition is on a different footing this year.

Organizer Maxi Krumm says: “The triathlon has finally arrived in Wörthsee.” Registration begins on March 1st.

The father of the Wörthsee Triathlon is Walter Neumann, who lived in Wörthsee until recently.

20 athletes took part in the first event in 1985.

At that time, the legal vehicle for organization and insurance was the Funkstreife Munich police association, of which Neumann was a member.

The club is still involved today.

“But recently more and more people from Wörthsee have been involved, and the Funkstreife club no longer brings together the large number of helpers,” reports Krumm, who is a sports scientist and trainer and has been co-organizing the triathlon alongside Neumann since 2015.

A few years ago Krumm founded his Sport & Lebensfreude GmbH.

“That was perhaps a bit oversized for me as a self-employed person at the time, but now it's proving its worth.” This is because the GmbH is considered the organizer for the first time this year, and Krumm also applied for the event to be held in its name this year.

For this reason, there was skepticism at the local council meeting.

Florian Tyroller (Greens) feared a “certain intention to make a profit”.

Managing director Christa Heintel was concerned about the remuneration of the auxiliary services.

However, sympathy for the event, which attracts hundreds of athletes and more than a thousand spectators to Steinebach every year, prevailed.

“It is a well-established, successful event,” said Mayor Christel Muggenthal.

Dirk Bödicker (WA) countered the doubters with the fact that the community could ultimately decide on the implementation every year if the matter got out of hand.

Apart from that: “I’m happy that Krumm is continuing to do this.” Also Dr.

Harald Lossau (FW) spoke of “a great cause that we should support”.

Jakob Aumiller (CSU) wanted to know why the number of participants was limited to 640 individual starters and 60 relays of three people each.

“There are already far too many,” stated Heintel.

Ultimately, the committee approved the implementation unanimously.

“Nothing will change in terms of implementation and event,” explained Maximilian Krumm yesterday.

The responsibility now lies primarily with him.

“But it had been planned for a long time that I would take over the event.” Because of the connection to the Funkstreife club, many people did not know or misunderstood that the triathlon was a Wörthsee event.

More than 100 volunteers are involved in the organization, plus the rescue workers from the fire department, BRK and water rescue service, who also receive compensation for their expenses.

Everything around it has also continued to grow with a focus on sustainability.

This year there will be a fundraising campaign to benefit the Wörthsee water rescue service, which will receive a new water rescue station in Steinebach.

There is organic catering, brass music and much more.

However, experience shows that the starting places are very popular.

The countdown for registration is already starting on the website woerthseetriathlon.de from March 1st.
