The Asylum Helpers Group in Tegernsee tries to help refugees in different ways.

In the future, there will also be support for coping with trauma.

The city council welcomes the project.

Tegernsee

- The work in the asylum helper group in Tegernsee and the stress that the refugees housed in the district gym are exposed to gave the impetus to offer intensive trauma education groups in the Miesbach district as well.

Initiator and helper group leader Veronika Bauer found open ears in the Tegernsee city council.

171 people currently live in the Tegernsee gym

Refugees have been living in the district's own gym in Tegernsee since the end of 2022 - according to the district office, there are currently 171 people from Afghanistan, Yemen, the Congo, Jordan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Syria, Tanzania and Turkey.

Three children between the ages of six and 16 also found temporary shelter here.

Veronika Bauer, who has led the group of helpers from the beginning and also looks after the refugees in the Bastenhaus (currently 51) as well as Ukrainian war refugees (36 people who are known to the district office), has now presented a concept for trauma therapy to the city council.

She came to this not only through her work in the helper group, but also through various inquiries and reports from doctors.

Psychological stress among asylum seekers is great

“Life-threatening situations cause psychological stress and thus health problems,” Bauer introduced the topic.

“The issue of trauma is also acute in the Tegernsee gym.” They have already asked therapists, but they have declined and explained that there are not enough therapy places available even for the local population.

Then Caritas made her aware of a project that currently only exists in large cities in Bavaria and nationwide, but also in the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district.

It's called TRIGG and stands for “Traumapedagogische Intensivegruppe für Refugees”.

“I was thrilled,” Veronika Bauer reported to the city councilors about the relevant training.

“It became clear to us that we also need this offer for people without a refugee background.” It’s not about therapy, says Bauer, but about helping people help themselves.

The plan: Starting in April, a group consisting of 15 to 20 people will meet every 14 days.

Therapists should lead the group together with trained volunteers and language mediators.

Eight volunteers are already in training.

The project is not yet dry

The Tegernsee Helpers' Circle will act as coordinator, and the support association PIA (Pact for Integration and Work) will take over the sponsorship.

The Tegernsee power plant and the Catholic parish would provide space and donors are being sought for the financing.

However, an application for funding was submitted to “Aktion Mensch” in order to cover the costs.

They also want to provide scientific support for the project.

“The project is not finished yet,” said Bauer, who is also supported by the hall doctor Susanne Drost.

And: “Contributors, participants and support are necessary for lasting success.

I would be really happy if we could do that.”

“The utmost respect” for the helper group chairwoman

Mayor Johannes Hagn (CSU) found the concept excellent because it really benefits everyone.

Thomas Mandl (SPD) also thought it was important to take care of migrants “and not asylum tourists”.

The mix of refugees and district citizens was also important to him.

Bauer was confident about the financing: “We can do it,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Michael Bourjau (FWG) found the project sustainable.

“This isn’t a flash in the pan.

You picked up the topic like a sniffer dog and are sticking with it.” He paid Veronika Bauer “the utmost respect.”
