Germany is allowed to provide 1.3 billion euros for the switch to climate-neutrally produced steel at the ArcelorMittal sites in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt.
The EU Commission approved the payment on Friday.
The Brussels authority said the measure will support the achievement of the goals of the EU hydrogen strategy and the European “Green Deal”.
Brussels - It will also help end dependence on fossil fuels from Russia and rapidly advance the ecological transition.
The measure supports ArcelorMittal's plan to decarbonize part of its steel production processes in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt, it said.
The company currently operates three coal blast furnaces and four oxygen inflation converters at the two locations to produce crude steel.
At the beginning of the month, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) announced the long-awaited funding commitment.
The federal government supports the switch to climate-neutrally produced steel at ArcelorMittal's locations in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt.
So far there has been no green light from Brussels.
With the “Green Deal”, the EU wants to become climate neutral by 2050.
The strategy includes measures in areas such as energy, transport, industry and agriculture.
