The dilapidated rail network of the Ammerseebahn and Pfaffenwinkelbahn has been a constant nuisance for years.

Now, after a round table with representatives of the neighboring communities in Peißenberg, Deutsche Bahn has announced extensive renovation work.

District - Peißenberg's mayor Frank Zellner was invited to the crisis meeting.

The appointment in the Tiefstollenhalle on Thursday afternoon, attended by Schongau Mayor Falk Sluyterman, Dießen's town hall boss Sandra Perzul and Landsberg District Administrator Thomas Eichinger, among others, took a long time.

No wonder, after all, there was enough to discuss with the representatives of Deutsche Bahn, which is responsible for the rail infrastructure, and the operator Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB).

As is well known, the poor state of the rail network in the region can be seen impressively between Weilheim and Peißenberg, where trains have no longer been allowed to run for a few days due to an unstable railway embankment.

“The limit of what is bearable has slowly been exceeded,” emphasized Sluyterman after the meeting, who is currently receiving complaints almost daily about the situation.

The railway embankment that is currently causing problems dates back to 1866.

The railway, which is responsible for the route network, has long been aware of the urgent need for action on the aging infrastructure.

However, not much has happened in recent years.

That should now change, as the company announced in a press release the next day after the crisis discussion.

The DB announced that the dam area should be stabilized so that trains can run on the route again by the end of March.

During this time, commuters have to make do with the replacement rail service between Weilheim and Peißenberg.

Not a pleasant situation, as Sluyterman also knows: Since the journey by bus takes longer than by train, the direct connection from Weilheim to Munich is unfortunately not safe.

At least on the return journey, the train from Peißenberg to Schongau could wait for the bus from Weilheim because of a time buffer in Schongau.

The Ammerseebahn will be modernized from August - the railway embankment renovation near Peißenberg will follow in 2025

The unstable dam is scheduled to be fundamentally renovated next year.

Even then, commuters will have to switch to the bus again, probably for three months.

According to Sluyterman, the work should take that long, according to Sluyterman at the meeting on Thursday.

The railway did not say when they would be carried out.

“Planning is currently underway.”

The company wants to tackle the modernization of the Ammerseebahn this year.

The DB will renew rails and sleepers as well as the track subsurface over a total of around 25 kilometers in four sections, according to the press release.

The renewal of switches and level crossing surfaces as well as the drainage system are also planned.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the work will start in August and will currently be completed in mid-December.

The route between Geltendorf and Weilheim must be completely closed during this period.

A “substitute offer” is being developed for BRB passengers.

BRB switches to the Fuchstalbahn for trips to Augsburg

Of course, this will not go via Schongau, even though BRB trains are currently running via the Fuchstalbahn towards Augsburg.

Due to the closed route between Weilhiem and Peißenberg, it is currently the only way to the BRB railway depot.

“Unfortunately there are no passengers on it,” says Sluyterman, who has been fighting for years to reactivate the route for passenger traffic.

The situation clearly shows “how important it would be to close the gap”.

The state-owned Bavarian Railway Company is currently carrying out a potential analysis for the Fuchstalbahn to determine whether there is sufficient demand for reactivation.

The crux of the matter is the 1,000 passenger kilometers that have to be achieved according to a complicated calculation.

For the Gotteszell-Viechtach line in Lower Bavaria, which is already in trial operation, this very criterion has recently been softened with the establishment of a workshop at the Viechtach train station - perhaps the argument also plays a role on the Fuchstalbahn.
