There are two brand new gymnasiums in front of the Puchheim high school, but they have not been usable for months.

Students are now increasingly being transported to physical education classes by bus.

There is no end in sight.

Puchheim – One hour out of every two is spent on transport.

Teachers are frustrated, it's a huge expense for the school.

Physical education classes begin in street clothes.

The fifth graders line up in the auditorium of the Puchheim high school.

Everyone holds a gym bag.

Teacher Ina Born wears colorful hula hoops around her neck, her colleague Jakob Jetschni carries a bag of volleyballs.

We set off in single file, past the new gymnasiums in front of the high school, where a worker is laying paving stones.

Two buses are already waiting in the parking bay in front of the school.

The goal: free gyms in neighboring towns.

hour of exercise

This way the children get at least one hour of exercise, the other hour is spent on the transfer.

This no longer has anything to do with fulfilling the curriculum.

“It's frustrating.

“You can’t do your job the way you would like to,” says sports teacher Jetschni.

Pretty blatant: The tenth graders have never experienced normal physical education lessons, the debacle has been going on for so long.

There are actually two newly built, stylish gymnasiums for high schools and secondary schools right in front of the door.

Only: They still haven't been released, five years after the groundbreaking ceremony.

The construction disaster surrounding the 21 million euro project continues.

It was hit hard by, among other things, delivery bottlenecks in the pandemic and because of the war in Ukraine, but not only.

The evidence

Finally, there was a lack of evidence regarding fire protection and statics.

According to the district office, these had to be requested from the companies several times.

The documents are now available.

But now deficiencies have to be remedied.

First of all, the hall is still a construction site.

The authority does not say how much longer.

It is another bitter disappointment for Monika Christoph, director of the high school.

She had hoped that everything would finally be ready by the timetable change next Monday.

But once again she has to change her plans.

Physical education in a state of emergency is now part of everyday life - especially in winter, and in summer the sports field helps a lot.

The tennis club

After the air dome was discontinued, the school management always tried to maintain as many sports lessons as possible.

Fitness studios and the club's domicile in the neighborhood have been booked, and bus transfers have been available for a long time, although not on the current scale.

The problem: Because it has been said for years that the new halls at the high school would soon be finished, the tennis club, which is located in the neighborhood, has been looking for new tenants.

Everyone involved assumed that the students would be lost again.

That's why the high school now uses the halls in Gröbenzell and Eichenau in addition to Olching (Heckenstrasse).

Almost half of the physical education lessons take place by bus.

Creating timetables now means planning around 60 minutes of return travel.

Plus changing and setting up in the auditorium.

Support

But at least: “This means that lessons can largely be guaranteed again,” says Christoph.

Despite the immense organizational effort, she is happy that the district office is covering the high costs of the buses and supporting the school in this way.

The parents don't think it's funny anymore.

The complaints end up with Puchheim's mayor Norbert Seidl, among others.

People in the town hall are also dissatisfied with the situation.

Above all, the lack of communication is annoying; it is “extremely brash”.

He calls for a task force for crisis communication.

The clubs that wanted to use the halls are also extremely annoyed.

You have had to reduce training times for a long time.

Peter Görlich, head of the volleyball department at FC Puchheim, chooses drastic words: “The first ones are starting to leave, so our successful youth work of the last few years is crumbling.” (
