At a Wuppertal high school, a 17-year-old is said to have attacked several classmates with knives and seriously injured them.
Psychologists are supposed to come to school today.
Wuppertal - After the knife attack on several students at a Wuppertal high school, investigations into the background to the violent crime are continuing.
The suspected perpetrator is a 17-year-old who is still a student himself.
The Wuppertal public prosecutor's office has not yet commented on the suspect's possible motives.
According to a police spokesman, investigators are assuming an amok attack.
They want to comment on the status of the investigation at a press conference today.
The high school triggered a shooting alarm on Thursday morning after the 17-year-old allegedly stabbed fellow students with several weapons.
He was arrested when the first police arrived.
The teenager had stab wounds - presumably self-inflicted.
The public prosecutor described the injuries as life-threatening.
The police initially put the number of injured victims at four, plus the suspected attacker himself. He and two students had to be treated in the intensive care unit.
School open today but no classes
According to the district government, the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium in the Elberfeld district will be open today, but there will be no classes for the students directly affected.
A total of 30 psychologists will come to the school to work through what has happened with the students.

The attack occurred in the middle of ongoing school operations.
Students reported how an announcement asked them to lock themselves in their classrooms.
The police searched the building and cordoned off a large area.
Around two hours after the operation began, the police announced that the students were safe.
