With stamp cards, children in Augsburg can cycle or walk to school - instead of being driven by parents.

There are prizes as rewards.

Augsburg – Almost every fourth primary school child is taken to school by their parents almost every day.

Although well-intentioned, parent taxis instead cause traffic chaos at many schools.

The

ADAC

, actually a friend of drivers, also regularly advises parents against driving their children to school by car.

According to a survey by the traffic club in spring 2023, dangerous situations arise again and again - especially for the children who you actually want to bring to school safely.

In May 2022, an eight-year-old was hit by a car in front of the Rotes Tor elementary school in downtown Augsburg.

As a result, according to the

Augsburger Allgemeine

, the parents' initiative “Before School” was launched, which brought about some changes.

A “parents stop” was set up and car drivers were specifically addressed.

The initiative also introduced a kind of bonus card.

The city of Augsburg has taken this as a model and expanded it to the entire city under the motto “Leave the parents’ taxi”.

Students can win prizes if their parents leave cars at home

The campaign begins after the carnival holidays;

It expires at the end of June – for now.

According to the city, every elementary school child receives a card.

For each day that she goes to school and back home without a parent taxi, the students can stamp or color in a field on the card.

At the end of the school year, the young participants can expect prizes - including, for example, tickets to outdoor swimming pools or museums.

The most successful primary school is awarded.

In addition to the bonus cards, according to the city there are flyers for parents with “information on the background and motives of the campaign”.

Martina Wild, consultant for education and migration and second mayor of the city, explains the campaign:

Children learn the first traffic rules and correct behavior in traffic as early as kindergarten.

When they start school, they are old enough to walk to and from school on their own.

Parents who bring their children by car endanger other school children when traffic becomes confusing.

She continues: “We want to encourage children and families in a playful way with our bonus cards.

Anyone who comes without a car receives a point, and at the end of the school year there are various prizes and rewards that are drawn among all participants.” Wild hopes that the “Leave the parents’ taxi” campaign will also have an impact at other schools.
