There were fewer serious accidents like the one at Herrsching in January 2023 last year, even if the total number of accidents increased.

More traffic accidents occurred in the Starnberg district last year than in 2022, but the pre-Corona level has not been reached.

Three people were killed and the number of injured rose slightly.

This is evident from the traffic statistics that have now been published.

District

- Despite increases in the number of accidents and injuries, Oliver Jauch, police traffic officer for the Starnberg district, can be satisfied with the 2023 accident statistics.

“The number of accidents is still below the average of the past ten years, although this has fallen significantly since 2020 due to the low numbers,” he explained about the figures published this week.

The main cause of serious accidents is still inappropriate speed, which is why inspections in the district want to increasingly hunt down speeders.

The pure numbers: Last year, 3,999 accidents were registered in the district, 282 or 7.6 percent more than in 2022 - this corresponds to the general trend in northern Upper Bavaria.

The number refers to the accidents recorded by the police.

For comparison: In the last year before Corona, 2019, there were 4,796 accidents - almost twenty percent more.

Three people died in accidents in 2023, the same number as in 2022. However: There were no fatalities in a classic vehicle accident.

On January 17, 2023, a senior citizen (85) died in Gauting when her husband hit and rolled over her while maneuvering not far from the Bosco.

On April 22nd, a 78-year-old was found in a field near Seefeld who had fallen on his bicycle, presumably due to alcohol.

The man later died in hospital.

A 79-year-old cyclist died from serious injuries after a fall on September 10th in Leoni while trying to avoid pedestrians.

Significantly fewer seriously injured people

The numbers of more serious accidents are also – still – below the pre-Corona values.

There were injuries in 514 accidents in 2023, five more than in the previous year.

In 2019 there were 535. The number of injured people rose from 591 to 603 - however, the number of seriously injured people fell significantly by 8.1 percent to 91. Anyone who has to stay in the hospital for 24 hours is considered seriously injured.

This development has been observed for a long time and has primarily to do with vehicle safety technology.

The majority of accidents are always small collisions, such as parking accidents and wildlife accidents.

The increases are similar: + 6.7 percent to 2,204 small accidents, including 535 accidents involving wild animals (+ 6.6 percent).

Almost a quarter of all accidents are associated with a hit-and-run (956, + 9.6 percent) - a value that is almost always in this range.

39.3 percent were solved, slightly less than in 2022. The increase in accident escapes with injured people is worrying: in 35 cases, those who caused the accident did not take care of the injured; in 2022 there were 25 cases.

There was an increase in the causes of alcohol (+14.9 percent); there were 54 alcohol-related and five drug-related accidents.

In almost a third, the perpetrators tried to escape. 25 people were injured in alcohol and drug accidents.

The number of speeding accidents has increased significantly - from 166 to 212 (+ 30.1 percent).

The number of people injured in speeding accidents fell by 8.4 percent to 98. Jauch emphasizes that it is not (just) about speeding, but also about many cases in which drivers have accidents in wet or slippery conditions, even though they are not driving too fast were too fast for the conditions.

However: Slippery conditions were only a factor in 48 accidents; accidents in wet conditions mainly affected the motorways (29).

Cyclist accidents are only decreasing slightly

The number of accidents on the way to school fell from eleven to six, with six people injured.

Motorcyclists were involved in 67 accidents (+49 percent), and were also the main culprit in 39 cases.

54 motorcyclists were injured, almost twice as many as in 2022. And the cyclists?

“The number of traffic accidents involving cyclists is still at a very high level, but has fallen slightly,” notes Jauch.

259 accidents were registered (2022: 266), in which 235 cyclists were injured (-8.6 percent).

134 people fell alone, a quarter of them were on Pedelecs.

In 199 cases, the cyclists were solely or mostly to blame for the accident, and in 17 cases it was due to illegal use of the sidewalk, i.e. cycling on the sidewalk - that is increasing, says Jauch.
