Underneath the shame board is the big 2000: That's how many shopliftings there were at the Edeka at Regensburg main station - a well-known crime hotspot.

The number continues to rise.

Regensburg – In December, a Regensburg Edeka boss turned to the public with a “cry for help”.

A cry for help that made national headlines and spread through the media and social networks.

Once again a shoplifter was caught in operator Konstantin Gatzke's supermarket.

Not an isolated case.

He vented his anger on Facebook and wrote, among other things: “Theft is always an issue.

Sometimes a can of Red Bull, chewing gum, a few bottles of beer.

But what happened in September/October has something of organized crime about it.”

Owner Raphael Dirnberger had a “Wall of Shame” installed at Edeka at Regensburg Central Station.

It shows how often things were stolen in the supermarket.

The Edeka branch at Regensburg main station also appears to be a popular target for criminals.

Possibly one reason: Due to its proximity to the train station, the supermarket is allowed to be open 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to midnight.

On average there are almost two thefts a day, said market manager Ferat Nuha to the

Bild

newspaper.

Sad record reached: 2000 thefts committed and discovered in Regensburger Edeka

Because things have gotten particularly bad since the summer of 2023, a special board was set up at the entrance to the supermarket.

The “Wall of Shame” shows the number of thefts that have been committed and discovered since Edekas opened at the beginning of 2021.

According to a

cross

-report by

Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR),

the store broke a special record in mid-February: a large “2000” has been emblazoned at the entrance ever since, welcoming customers.

The number continues to grow every day.

According to store manager Nuha, the damage caused so far by the shoplifting is around 100,000 euros.

Raphael Dirnberger, owner of Edekas, told

BR

: “We said: We have to think about something for the 2,000th thief so that he gets something presented – a medal of honor, for example.” That was something special, he said with a laugh.

Dirnberger also joked with his security staff about hanging up balloons.

Crime hotspot Regensburg main station

According to the police, crime in the city's train station area has increased since the middle of last year.

In January, sexual crimes reported in quick succession - one of which subsequently turned out to be untrue - triggered not only widespread media coverage but also a political debate.
