Good cycle paths through the city are constantly being called for in Schongau.

There is currently an opportunity to make improvements to the Hollberg.

The key point is the space.

Schongau – Schongau's environmental officer Bettina Buresch doesn't leave the Hollberg issue alone.

She recently complained that tree felling work had been carried out there in preparation for the upcoming road renovation in the spring.

In some cases, healthy trees were unnecessarily removed by the State Building Authority because, for economic and personnel reasons, they preferred to do tabula rasa instead of carefully cutting them out at regular intervals.

“The State Building Authority is also understaffed, but taxpayers' money is being wasted because these trees were deliberately planted with public money - that's not right,” said Schongau's environmental officer in the most recent Building and Environment Committee.

Hollberg in Schongau: Road markings to protect cyclists under discussion

In addition, according to the Green city councilor, the railings on the footpath and cycle path should apparently be replaced and no longer made of wood, but of metal.

She wanted to know whether the city was aware of this and why the committee was not informed when and to what extent work was being done in Schongau.

"I don't think it's a good idea not to know about it - we should at least know how things are done in our city, even if it's just a safety railing."

She once again wanted to talk about markings on the road for cyclists before the start of the construction site on Altenstadter Strasse.

This had already been an issue when the city presented the measure on Hollberg.

Safety railings “much more economical made of metal”

“We are informed, but in this case the burden of construction lies with the state building authority,” said city architect Sebastian Dietrich.

He had a very simple explanation as to why the railing between the pedestrian/cycle path and the road should be made of metal in the future: “It is much more economical to make it out of metal.” The wooden railing is pretty dilapidated and now needs to be replaced, added Martin Blockhaus that area of the construction project for which the city is responsible is on the table.

A wooden structure like this has to be replaced every ten or 15 years; metal has a significantly longer shelf life.

With wood, the risk of injury is also very high, not least because of the wood splinters.

Andreas Lenker, department head at the Weilheim State Building Authority, also sees it that way.

“Metal lasts forever – as long as no one drives into the railing.” Wooden railings are no longer permitted outside of town.

However, an exception was recently made on the cycle path between Schongau and Peiting - where the railing does not separate the cycle path from the road, but the wooden barrier only runs along the outer edge of the cycle path.

With the greenery facing the Lech, this visually fits into the landscape better than a metal railing.

“But in terms of the award, it was certainly wrong,” says Lenker.

An appointment on site should help if you have any questions about the cycle path on the Hollberg

But how can the Hollberg become safer for cyclists?

A traffic show will now take place shortly.

A joint meeting with representatives of the city of Schongau, the Schongau police and the Weilheim-Schongau district office is planned for the first week of March.

Blockhaus cannot yet say whether the marking Buresch wanted can be implemented on the road, especially since he does not want to anticipate the on-site appointment.

Just this much: “I can imagine a painted bicycle lane, but only on one side.” Due to the path that can be used together with pedestrians, cyclists are currently quite well protected uphill, but cyclists going downhill are not.

Andreas Lenker from the State Building Authority sees no possibility of marking on both sides for cyclists; at least 7.50 meters of road width would be necessary for this.

With a one-sided dashed bicycle protection strip, which is likely to be driven over by drivers, you need at least six meters of space, preferably more.

“It's almost six meters there, so it would be ideal to widen the footpath on Hollberg,” says Lenker.

This would be a matter for the city.

And not so easy on a slope, as the upcoming road renovation shows (see box below).

The local newspapers in the Weilheim-Schongau district are represented on Instagram under “merkur_wm_sog”.

Between Easter and Pentecost, the state building authority is building on the district road, followed by the city's construction site

The Weilheim State Building Authority and the Schongau City Building Authority have agreed on the construction site on Altenstadter Straße: Between Easter and Pentecost, the first construction phase will take place on Altenstadter Straße from the Kurt-Gnettner-Ring junction up the Hollberg to the Franz-Josef-Strauß-Straße junction and from there to the bridge towards B17.

Andreas Lenker from the Weilheim State Building Authority hopes that this section of the district road should be completed by the Whitsun holidays.

Not so easy, especially in the outer curve - uphill on the right - the foundation had to be rebuilt to stabilize the slope.

The soil there is very compacted and heavy due to the many small repairs that have already been carried out and now needs to be stabilized by installing lean concrete - “a construction method that has proven very effective in mountain areas,” says Lenker.

The entire carriageway of the district road will then be resurfaced.

The part of the city of Schongau then goes towards Schongauer Straße - which is planned for the Whitsun holidays.

According to Lenker, the reason for this is the planned diversions during the construction period: In the first section, bus traffic will be rerouted via Marktoberdorfer and Schönlinder Straße.

During the Whitsun holidays at the city of Schongau's construction site, traffic has to go via the bypass via the B17 to the Schongau-West junction - "that's the bigger diversion," says Lenker.

Remaining work after Pentecost is possible.

A total of around 500,000 euros has been earmarked for the renovation of Altenstadter Straße.

The city's share was estimated at around 165,000 euros - without a stop for the city bus.

This renewal was put on the back burner for the time being.
