At a Wuppertal high school, a 17-year-old is said to have attacked several classmates with stabbing weapons and seriously injured them.

A child and adolescent therapist warns of increasing brutality.

Düsseldorf/Wuppertal - From the perspective of Cologne child and adolescent psychotherapist Christian Lüdke, the shooting at a Wuppertal high school is an example of increasing violent crimes among teenagers or young adults of the same age.

Although the police crime statistics do not show a drastic increase in the total number of such cases, brutality and the use of knives and other weapons are increasing, Lüdke said on Friday on WDR 5's "Morgenecho".

There are often indications very early on in the family when a child is drifting away.

“First of all, that children are either very quiet, silent, have little social contact or are very aggressive relatively early on, sometimes glorifying violence,” the trauma therapist described behavioral problems.

Unfortunately, this is often not responded to.

In fact, the parental home is a major risk factor in the development of violent children, explained Lüdke, who also worked as a psychological trainer for special units of the North Rhine-Westphalia police.

“Such young people often have parents who tolerate violence themselves or are very aggressive themselves.”

In these families there is often no strong emotional bond, so the children are often unable to develop compassion for others.

“As a result, they then fall into a kind of emotional general anesthesia,” said the expert.

“They feel powerless and by using violence they transform the feeling of powerlessness into a short-term experience of omnipotence.

In the worst case, according to the motto: I am master of life and death.”

What happened in Wuppertal?

A Wuppertal high school triggered a shooting alarm on Thursday morning after a 17-year-old allegedly stabbed fellow students with several weapons.

The police initially gave the number of injured victims as four, plus the suspected attacker.

He and two students had to be treated in the intensive care unit.

There will be more details of the investigation from the police and public prosecutor's office on Friday afternoon.

Just a few days ago, two young basketball players from Ukraine were stabbed at Oberhausen Central Station.

In this case, four 14- to 15-year-olds are considered urgent suspects and are in custody.
