A Palestinian member of Islamic Jihad, involved in several anti-Israeli attacks, was
“eliminated”
by an Israeli drone strike Thursday evening in the Jenin sector, in the occupied West Bank, the army said Friday.
The attack targeted
“Yasser Hanoun, a Jenin resident and Islamic Jihad terrorist, who had previously been detained for his involvement in the terrorist organization's military activities
,” the army said in a statement.
He
“was preparing to commit another attack”
, specifies the text.
The car was struck on a street in the densely populated Jenin refugee camp, located below the town of the same name in the northern West Bank.
On site, the remains of the almost completely destroyed vehicle were on fire in the middle of a street, a few meters from a building, AFP noted Thursday evening.
“Two successive missiles hit the car
,” Usayd Shelbi told AFP, present at the time of the strike which caused, according to him, the explosion of the weapons that were in the vehicle.
Increase in deadly attacks
Thursday evening, the Palestinian Authority Health Ministry reported a
“bombing of a car in the Jenin camp”
, reporting one dead and many injured.
Deadly incidents have been increasing in the West Bank since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7, between attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians, attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, and almost daily raids by the Israeli army.
Since the start of the war on October 7, launched by Israel after an unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israeli soil, more than 360 people have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah.
The year 2023 has been one of the deadliest in the conflict for them since 2005. At the end of January, three young Palestinians - two members of Islamic Jihad and one of Hamas - were killed by Israeli agents disguised as doctors while they were were in the Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin, an operation criticized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
