An Australian couple went on a very special trip at the beginning of 2024. The reason for this was a faux pas at the Cologne Carnival.
Anyone who has ever been to the Cologne Carnival knows that things can get strange among the thousands of partygoers.
The whole city is in a party mood, and those involved outdo each other with funny and creative costumes.
A man who celebrated carnival dressed as Jesus became an internet icon in 2017.
Because, as befits a good Jesus disguise, the man carried a cross with him.
However, while riding the escalator in a subway station, he misjudged the size of the cross and used it to punch a hole in the ceiling.
The clip went viral on various platforms and has already been viewed over 16 million times on YouTube (as of February 21, 2024).
It's logical that the video also became known outside of Germany - including in Australia.
A man there raved about the video to his girlfriend and jokingly told her that he would “make a pilgrimage to this place.”
He reports this – username “towerbooks3192” – on the “Reddit” platform, where strange stories are often shared.

Woman surprises her boyfriend with a trip from Australia to Germany
Fun became serious.
The woman wanted to make her partner happy and surprised him with a trip to Cologne, among other things, to look at the well-known hole caused by Jesus.
Because the crazy thing is that the hole in the Cologne subway station is still gaping in the ceiling seven years after the incident.
The Reddit user achieved his goal and was able to upload a photo of himself on the same well-known escalator on which Jesus once stood with his cross on February 6th.
The online magazine
Reisereporter
also reported on the case.
Visibly happy about this, he captioned his picture: “I made the pilgrimage here all the way from Australia to see this meme site.
The happiest day of my life.” Under the post he also explained that he had heard rumors that the hole still existed today and had told his girlfriend about it.

In the comments, Reddit users are enthusiastic about the crazy campaign: “Just in time for the carnival.
Have fun!” Another had a tip for the Australian: “I didn’t know that the meme had become internationally known.
You have to marry that woman!" He also receives a response from the meme fan who was surprised by his girlfriend: "That's the plan!
I'm so happy to have her." So maybe after the trip to Cologne the wedding bells will soon ring for the Australian couple.
