Democracy is a valuable commodity, but anti-democratic voices are increasingly being heard.

A development that has brought two students into action at Schongauer Juze.

Schongau – If you enter the Schongau youth center, it gets dark.

Just inside the front door, a huge black ceiling blocks access to the rooms on the ground floor.

Those in the know know: The Köhlerstadel's main attraction is currently hidden behind this cover - an unusual and yet "very classic" escape room, as those responsible explain.

While common escape rooms confront their visitors with puzzles from very different areas and serve solely for entertainment, the creators of the Schongau example have made “enlightenment and educational work” their mission.

In order to solve the many puzzles and ultimately escape from the escape room, a good deal of brain acrobatics is required, as the future head of Juze, Basti Kosler, impressively demonstrated during a visit.

You have to find keys, crack combination locks and filter out messages and clues from seemingly cryptic text fragments.

In any case, the matter turns out to be more complicated than one might initially think.

“You can reach young people better through fun”

The fact that the project of the two students Sophie Lang and Viktoria Kölbl is dedicated to “political enlightenment” becomes clear as soon as you enter the room in question.

Distributed around a central table, numerous black, red and gold flags adorn the room walls and a lectern.

The two would like to emphasize the value of democracy and its importance for our society - also in view of the last U18 election - and to bring it closer to young people in an exciting way.

The aim is also to show “what if they didn’t exist,” notes Sophie Lang.

“You can reach young people better through fun,” adds her fellow student.

The goal is “education in passing” – not boring “frontal teaching”.

Escaperoom has been tested by experts

A run usually takes about an hour, the two explain and refer to the help of the “One Breakout Escaperoom” in Altenstadt, whose team had extensively tested the Schongau puzzle room in advance.

“We let the professionals give us the go,” say the two students happily.

Even the experts would have needed almost 40 minutes to complete one run, they noted.

“The puzzles are too complex” for an even faster round. The young women emphasize that they even got help from the circus.

The district youth association had helped them financially.

He even wants to adopt the concept afterwards.

Until word got around about the project, things got off to a somewhat “bumpy” start.

In the meantime, however, registrations from schools or “from the open Juze operation” are regularly coming in.

The full day at the secondary school, middle school classes or even the Schönach school have now been announced.

In the afternoon the students were also expecting a group from Saint Alban.

Escaperoom is aimed at young people from the 7th grade onwards

The offer is primarily interesting from the 7th grade onwards.

It is particularly difficult for schools to send separate groups.

After all, only small teams of four and five are planned for each round.

You can “puzzle your way to your goal” in Juze until next week.

The project developers are pleased that the feedback from young people has been “consistently positive” so far.

“It’s really exciting to experience the individual groups,” says Basti Kosler.

While some act “totally reserved” and judgmental, others “really riot,” laughs Kosler.

Some, in their arrogance, left no stone unturned and turned over every pot, said the future leader.

But even those who are sometimes overwhelmed by intellectual guesswork “don’t get frustrated in here,” assures Sophie Lang, pointing to the corner of the room.

A surveillance camera constantly keeps an eye on the escape room and therefore also the actions of the aspirants.
