Now the monument association and the city have it in black and white: a report from an independent tree expert confirms that the three lime trees on Bahnhofstrasse are in “acute danger of breakage.

The felling should now take place “promptly”.

Penzberg - The Penzberg building committee made the decision to cut down the three winter linden trees in April 2023 - for safety reasons.

But this decision has not yet been implemented in practice.

The monument association fought against this massively.

Two of the trees are “undoubtedly worthy of a monument because murder victims of the Penzberg murder night were hanged on them,” the association said.

Albert Grauvogel is said to have been hanged on the linden tree right next to the main intersection and Sebastian Tauschinger almost died on the neighboring tree.

The association demanded that after the felling recommendation by the city tree inspector, an additional report from an independent, sworn tree expert be obtained (we reported).

This report is now available and was presented in summary by Carl-Christian Wippermann at the most recent meeting of the building committee.

As the head of the environmental and climate protection department explained in the town hall, Karla Melka-Müller's expertise confirmed the professional assessment of the Penzberg tree controller.

“Unfortunately the trees are not doing well at all,” emphasized Wippermann.

This is clear from the report without a doubt.

Among other things, the trees suffer from advanced trunk rot.

And even if the three lime trees are only “very reluctantly” removed, the city is “absolutely forced to act” after the second report because: “The trees are not safe,” warned Wippermann.

The trunk rot is very advanced and the crowns are at risk of breaking.

Against this background, Wippermann once again referred to the city's traffic safety obligation.

The dilapidated trees posed a danger to passers-by in this area.

Age can only be estimated - “No clear statement” about the historical significance of the trees

According to Wippermann, whether the linden tree at the main intersection is actually the tree on which Albert Grauvogel was hanged in May 1945, the report does not make a clear statement in his opinion.

There would only be an “age estimate” of over 100 years.

In order to be definitively certain whether the tree at the main intersection is the linden tree on which a person was hanged, one would have to cut down the other two linden trees in order to accurately determine the age of all three.

“But that doesn’t help us,” says Wippermann.

Because the trees would never be healthy again.

“We can't save them anymore.” The report also recommends “felling” the tree at the main intersection.

His department now recommends the careful removal of the trees, as had already been decided by the building committee in April 2023.

The tree slices as “historical foundations” should be preserved.

In addition, “healthy new trees” will be planted to restore the character of the avenue on Bahnhofstrasse.

However, these new trees would then have to be treated with more care, “which they also need at this point”.

This has been neglected in recent years.

Among other things, the soil would have to be kept loose and the tree slices would have to be better protected.

Raise a tree stump as a monument?

When Armin Jabs (BfP) asked whether the tree at the main intersection, which was historically significant for the Penzbergers, could be shortened and the torso “raised to a monument,” Wippermann said that the “expert report was very clear in its statement” and recommended it “the felling”.

The lower nature conservation authority in the district office also issued a clear statement on this in November, according to which “the three trees in question are not considered a natural monument”.

The city could shorten the lime tree to two meters and protect the trunk with a metal frame.

But it's not particularly visually appealing, and the tree stump will still break.

The tree has shaped our history

Markus Bocksberger

Markus Bocksberger (PM), who chaired the meeting on behalf of Mayor Stefan Korpan, suggested that this linden tree should be carefully felled and that the trunk would then be further processed artistically, because: “The tree has shaped our history.” A memorial plaque could also refer to the Historical events that once happened at “this memorable location” should be pointed out - an idea that was well received by some committee members.

In a written statement from the monument association on the results of the report and the planned removal of the trees, it is said that they are now considering “how we can ensure that the historical significance of the lime tree in particular can be made clear directly at the traffic lights at the main intersection.”

It would be conceivable for the club to have a metal structure around the tree to secure the tree.
