Josef Unglert and his family built the well-known organic farm in Puchheim-Ort.

He has now died at the age of 92.

Puchheim-Ort – Josef Unglert was a young man in his 30s when he narrowly escaped death.

Because of a serious illness, his life hung by a thread for weeks.

But the master farmer and field manager at Gut Roggenstein got well again - and still had a long life ahead of him.

The native of Lower Allgäu would probably never have ended up on the state estate north of Eichenau if his widowed father-in-law hadn't taken on a partner who didn't want to know anything about farming.

So the farm that Josef and Martha Unglert should have taken over was sold.

From the front

The young family - daughter Marianne was already born, two more children were to follow - had to start from scratch.

Josef Unglert then indirectly came to his own farm.

His son, who is also called Josef, set up a business together with his wife on the outskirts of the town - the Biolandhof Unglert in Puchheim-Ort, which is known throughout the region.

Having barely retired, the senior citizen enthusiastically got involved.

“He sat on the bulldog from morning to night,” the son remembers.

“Rounding, mowing, raking – no one has done it as cleanly as him.”

Living together

The fact that four generations lived together under one roof worked just as well as the collaboration.

Josef and Martha, Josef junior and Monika, their three adult children and now three grandchildren - an extended family straight out of a picture book.

The son is convinced that the fact that his parents were in the middle of everything and were needed well into old age kept them healthy and mentally fit.

In his limited free time, Josef Unglert was an enthusiastic hunter and target shooter.

As a member of the Immergrün club in Eichenau, he was successful in competitions more than once and even marched in the Munich Oktoberfest as the shooting king.

One day he returned from a trip to Canada with the skin of a bear he had killed.

This year Josef and Martha Unglert celebrated their wedding anniversary.

The sandpit friendship and childhood love turned into almost 70 years of marriage.

Together they overcame low blows - the worst was the death of their then four-year-old daughter Brigitte, who was hit by a car while riding her scooter.

Martha Unglert died last summer.

Now her husband has followed her.

Josef Unglert was 92 years old.
