Wittelsbacherstrasse between Kurfürstenstrasse and Maximilianstrasse was actually supposed to be reopened to normal two-lane traffic after construction work.

The planning and building committee of the city of Germering also gave the green light.

But no one had expected the letter from parents at the local school.

Germering - The day before the committee, a letter from the parents' council of the Theresen Elementary School, which is located on Wittelsbacherstrasse, reached the city and parliamentary groups.

The parent representatives had spoken out in favor of maintaining the one-way street rule that applied during construction work at the middle school.

Because: As a result, traffic has decreased.

In addition, the students who attend the open all-day care (OGTS) starting at the beginning of the 2024/25 school year would have to use Wittelsbacherstrasse at least partially for their journey.

Invalidated

An argument that city architect Jürgen Thum refuted.

Once the work is completed, the sidewalk along the middle school will be of a comfortable width and in some cases will not have a direct connection to the street, for example with parking spaces as a buffer zone.

In addition, the Theresen elementary school students can access the OGTS internally without even having to leave the school grounds.

But what caused the most stir was the letter from the parents' council because the planning would have to start all over again.

In other words: one-way regulation instead of restoring two lanes.

“I feel overwhelmed by the letter,” said CSU parliamentary group spokesman Oliver Simon.

Access to primary school takes place in a completely different place.

Like Thum, Simon referred to the school's internal route to OGTS.

The CSU city council found the parents' arguments challenging.

A number of other requests to speak produced a similar picture.

Mayor Andreas Haas (CSU) was one of many to point out that plans to abolish the one-way rule had been in place for many years.

Traffic has calmed down

Daniel Liebetruth (SPD) also voted for the two-lane expansion.

“In the interest of continuing the planning.” At the same time, he apologized to the parents’ council for their letter written at short notice.

“Such a committee meets at most once a month.” Sophie Schuhmacher (Greens) also voted in favor, although she did see advantages in the one-way system.

“Traffic in the area has calmed down.”

The not uncontroversial planning of the bus stops for line 851 almost fell a little behind.

The aim here is to maintain stopping points on both sides of the street, although perhaps not at the current location.

Christian Gruber's suggestion to create a bus bay was rejected.

The extent of this was underestimated, the administration said.

A length of 18 meters should definitely be taken into account.
