A playful approach is intended to increase interest in French.

Can prejudices be eliminated in this way?

Geretsried

– “French is difficult and elitist.

It is written differently than pronounced.

It’s no fun” – many young people have these prejudices towards the foreign language.

The French branch at the Geretsried secondary school has also been feeling this for years.

“In the past, fewer students chose this area,” says subject teacher Katharina Böhmer.

That's why she's all the more pleased that after four years the school management has finally managed to bring the France Mobil to the secondary school.

Fewer and fewer secondary school students in Geretsried are choosing the French branch

A young employee, 23-year-old Johane Siro, excited all sixth graders one after the other about their native language and French culture in a playful and innovative way during a lesson on Thursday.

France Mobil is offered throughout Germany by the German-French Youth Office in close cooperation with the French Embassy and the Institut français d'Allemagne as well as the state governments with the support of Ernst Klett Verlag.

“We want to take away the students’ fear of the new language and show them what they already know in French and what they know about the country,” says Johane Siro.

Sixth graders were playfully encouraged to have their say

The young woman spoke only French to the sixth graders, and it was amazing what they understood and how quickly they learned simple sentences.

They were able to hear “Je m'appelle...” (My name is...), “J'ai douze ans” (I am twelve years old) and “J'aime jouer de la guitare” (I like to play the guitar). Play the ending perfectly.

Siro used gestures, music and a dice game to encourage the sixth graders, who had no previous knowledge of French, to join in and talk.

She successfully refuted the fact that the language was supposedly not fun.

After the Easter holidays, the students have to decide

After the Easter holidays, the secondary school students have to decide on a branch: mathematics and science, economics, the arts or French.

As Gabriele Rau from the school management reports, 44 girls and 14 boys are currently attending the branch in grades seven to ten.

With 443 students, this corresponds to a proportion of 13 percent.

There are also opportunities to practice a foreign language in France.

There is currently no student exchange with Geretsried's sister city Chamalières.

The young people have the opportunity to practice the language on a trip to Strasbourg and by visiting a language school in Saint-Raphaël on the Côte d'Azur.
