A Delta Air Lines plane was forced to return to the airport after maggots suddenly rained down from the overhead compartment.
A piece of luggage was packed incorrectly.
The plane was scheduled to fly from Amsterdam to Detroit in the USA on Tuesday (February 13th) and had already been in the air for an hour when a disgusting scene suddenly occurred: maggots rained down on a passenger from the aircraft's overhead compartment.
This was later reported by fellow passenger Philip Schotte, who said he was sitting right next to him, according to the
German Press Agency
(dpa).
The plane then turned around and returned to Amsterdam airport.

“She freaked out,” reported the Dutch Scot, according to the online portal

“She was just trying to ward off these maggots.” At first he didn’t understand what was happening.
“We had to wait until help came.” The flight attendants followed the trail of maggots to a bag that was in the hand luggage compartment - when they took a look inside, they discovered a rotten fish inside.
“I saw everyone’s reaction when the bag was opened.
They immediately turned up their noses.” The crew wrapped the fish in newspaper and brought it to the back of the plane.

Schotte did not remember whether the passenger to whom the bag belonged had to pay a fine.
However, he was surprised that the spoiled fish and the maggots were not noticed during the security check.
A statement from Delta Air Lines said the trip had to be interrupted due to improperly packed carry-on luggage, according to
Fox 2 Detroit

“The aircraft returned to the gate and the passengers were rebooked on the next available flight.
The aircraft was taken out of service for cleaning.”
Can food be carried in hand luggage?
The airlines have strict rules when it comes to hand luggage.
However, food is permitted as long as it is solid, dry and transported in a well-sealed and leak-proof container.
These include, for example, sandwiches, salads or even snacks.
Be careful with foods with a creamy consistency: jam, honey, hummus or cream cheese are liquids and may only be carried in the well-known 100 milliliter containers.
Also pay attention to the import regulations of your travel country: In the USA, for example, fresh fruit and vegetables are not very welcome because plant pests or diseases could be introduced.
