An era is coming to an end at Tegernsee High School: Director Werner Oberholzner is retiring on August 1st.
After 21 years as a school principal.
Tegernsee
- With his 21 years in Tegernsee, Oberholzner is a kind of record holder in his Upper Bavaria East school district: He is the director who has currently worked as head of the same high school for the longest time.
There were never any reasons for Oberholzner to change
“It was an incredibly long time,” says Oberholzner looking back.
In all these years, the now 65-year-old has never had a reason to leave the Tegernsee school and pursue a different career.
Oberholzner lives with his family in Miesbach. He always enjoyed running the high school on the lake and the commute between his job and his home was easy.
Oberholzner knows that only his predecessor, Hans-Herbert Perlinger, was in office longer than he was.
He was even head of the Tegernsee high school for 26 years before he was retired.
Long-distance travel will soon also be possible outside of school holidays
The fact that this will be the case for him at the end of the school year is a thought that Oberholzner still has to get used to.
“I’m putting it off for a bit,” he says.
But he already has ideas about how he could spend the time after his active professional career.
“We like to travel long distances,” says Oberholzner.
And he is particularly looking forward to being able to do this outside of the school holidays in the future.
“In the past we have already run out of targets that are suitable for August,” he says with a smile.
Students had already said goodbye to their outgoing principal
Oberholzner will have his last day of work on July 31st, and there is already a date for the official farewell: It is scheduled to take place on July 19th.
The fact that the students had already organized a tattoo including a torchlight procession for their outgoing director as part of their colorful evening was a huge surprise and joy for Oberholzner at the same time.
That really touched him, the Miesbacher admits.
Oberholzner's successor at Tegernsee High School is still unclear
Incidentally, it is not yet clear who will succeed Oberholzner as head of the Tegernsee high school.
Oberholzner points out that such decisions are usually made at very short notice in schools.
The position has not even been advertised by the Ministry of Culture in Munich.
Oberholzner estimates who will hold the scepter in the historic school walls in the future will probably only be determined in the course of June.
