Dennis Thering is at the head of the Hamburg CDU - in the party and parliamentary group.

He has only held the state chairmanship for almost a year - now he can continue for the next two years.

Hamburg - Dennis Thering has been elected state chairman of the Hamburg CDU for another two years.

He is leading his party into the upcoming district, European and national elections this summer and early next year.

At the state party conference in Wandsbek on Saturday, the 39-year-old received 203 of 215 valid votes cast.

Seven delegates voted against him and five abstained.

This corresponds to an approval of 94.4 percent.

Before his election, Thering had prepared the party congress for the election campaigns with sharp attacks on the Berlin traffic lights and the red-green Hamburg Senate.

The green economic recovery in Germany promised by the SPD, Greens and FDP has developed into a downturn.

“The traffic light government has done serious damage to this country in a very short space of time,” he said.

“And that is why this government must be replaced.”

He accused the red-green Senate of not solving the port's problems for years, not tackling important infrastructure projects and neglecting security in the city.

“This is nothing but bad governance, and the people of this city no longer deserve this,” Thering said.

Thering, who also chairs the parliamentary group, took over the leadership of the Hamburg CDU from Bundestag member Christoph Ploß in April last year.

The previous deputy chairmen Anke Frieling, Philipp Heißner, Natalie Hochheim and Christoph de Vries as well as treasurer Roland Heintze were also up for election on Saturday.
