The world was still in order back then: the political duo Lilian Edenhofer and Martin Sielmann were in a state of joy last year after the initiative to preserve the congress center prevailed in the referendum.

This step came as a surprise: Lilian Edenhofer, controversial opposition politician and bitter Koch opponent, has announced her resignation from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen local council.

One can only speculate about the reasons.

One thing is certain: the withdrawal has far-reaching consequences in terms of power politics.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Last Thursday evening, Lilian Edenhofer (non-party) and her political ally Martin Sielmann (FDP) were in the best opposition mood in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen local council: The duo, who have been in the new Free and Liberals for Garmisch faction since last year - Partenkirchen united and fought energetically for committee seats that they believed they were entitled to.

Short email to town hall administration

But the legal dispute that arose in the struggle for influence in the expert committees, which often provided preliminary advice, is probably unnecessary: it looks like the conflict-tested two-party alliance is history.

Because Edenhofer is giving up - and this will most likely result in the faction's status, for which at least two seats are needed, being lost.

On Saturday evening, Edenhofer sent an email to the town hall administration in which she briefly and succinctly stated in one sentence that she was resigning from her position as a member of the market town council.

Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU) confirmed this yesterday.

When asked, Edenhofer made no secret in a written statement that he was quite frustrated with local politics.

“The conditions and the atmosphere in the local council do not allow us to work constructively for the place and its citizens,” she writes.

This was noticed last Thursday when “there was just arguing back and forth” – “instead of taking care of the place and the citizens and their problems”.

According to Edenhofer, she came into office to pursue practical politics and work for the benefit of the market.

But it's just a matter of "pure bickering and personal animosity."

For this reason she decided to quit.

She leaves it open whether she will also give up her district council mandate.

Power relations are shifting

With Edenhofer's resignation, which the local council still has to officially approve, the balance of power in the district council's committee is shifting.

Unless he finds a new comrade-in-arms, Sielmann will have to come to terms with the fate of the FDP lone fighter.

And the Free Voters, for whom Edenhofer once won the mandate, are returning to their old strength - from the current two-party to the three-party faction.

The first replacement according to the list is Chester Fabricius, then comes Florian Wörndle.

As a reminder: Edenhofer was once the Free Voters' hopeful and mayoral candidate.

But over the course of the electoral period, due to serious differences, there was a break with the parliamentary group and later he left the party.

Edenhofer approached the FDP, but this fell through, and eventually joined forces with Sielmann to form the Free and Liberals for Garmisch-Partenkirchen faction.

The two ran fundamental opposition and gave dissatisfied citizens a voice.

Most recently, for example, they supported the citizens' initiative to preserve the Congress Center - with success.

The group prevailed against the majority opinion of the local council, which favored a new building.

City hall boss Koch - the CSU grandee and Edenhofer are deeply hostile - cannot hide a certain relief.

“I don’t shed a tear for Ms. Edenhofer,” says the community leader.

Edenhofer did not distinguish herself through factual work, but rather through “polemics” and “inappropriate behavior” together with her parliamentary group colleague.

Sielmann, who took part in the FDP state party conference in Ingolstadt yesterday, expressed his initial reaction to optimism.

The liberal hopes that Edenhofer's announced exit is not set in stone.

Sielmann continued, he would do everything in his power to get his colleague to change his mind.

Meanwhile, the Free Voters are keeping their feet still in the Edenhofer case.

You can only say anything about it when the whole thing is in writing, says Martin Kurschatke, who, together with Daniel Schimmer, holds up the flag for the Free Voters on the local council.
