To justify the possible jump in gas bill prices next July, Emmanuelle Wargon, president of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), gave, a few days ago, an explanation worthy of the most beautiful haikus.
The increase would be
“essentially linked to the fact that consumption is falling”.
According to the latest data from GRTgaz, gas consumption has in fact decreased by 25% since 2018 in France.
Manufacturers have made colossal efforts to improve efficiency and households, following government injunctions, have played the game of sobriety, put on turtlenecks and lowered their thermostat.
Here they are very badly rewarded.
For consumers, the price of gas depends on three factors: the supply price on wholesale markets, the price of infrastructure and taxation.
It is the second lever, the financing of infrastructures, which is at stake here. Their operating costs are in fact not correlated to consumption.
