How can we protect the environment?

You could get to know a variety of creative ideas on Sunday in Planegg - at the award ceremony for the 2023 Environmental Prize.

Planegg

- The award ceremony of the Planegg Environmental Prize 2023 took place on a large scale on Sunday.

Nine projects were honored in front of around 150 visitors in the TV Planegg-Krailling hall.

A total of twelve applications were received, reported Peter von Schall-Riaucour, the founder of the prize worth 7,500 euros.

“With a community of 11,000 residents, there is still room for improvement.” Von Schall-Riaucour moderated the festive event together with television presenter Anna Groß, and the band Alex Bender with frontman Fabian Nafziger provided the musical setting.

When selecting the winners, the jury focused on reducing greenhouse gases, explained Angelika Lawo.

The winner's prize, worth 1,500 euros, went to TV Planegg-Krailling.

Last year, the sports club started a variety of environmental projects in a wide variety of areas under the motto “Small steps, lasting impact” - from a collection campaign for old cell phones to the construction of insect hotels and a competition for an environmental mascot.

There was also a campaign under the motto “Car-free TV” as well as environmental tips for members.

“It is also important to provide small impulses,” emphasized Mayor Hermann Nafziger, patron of the environmental award as a representative of the community.

How can we contribute to saving the rainforest, which is being cut down on a large scale to grow soy, especially as feed for livestock?

Niklas Frömming, Matteo Roggenkamp and Julian Wölfe thought about this.

The fifth graders have built their own breeding station for black soldier flies, whose maggots can be used as animal feed and thus as a substitute for soy.

Organic waste from their own households served as food for the insects.

The maggots were then fed to the chickens of a local farmer, who was then able to avoid soy.

For their great idea, the trio was awarded the first-ever Planegger Children's and Youth Environmental Prize and 1,500 euros.

The Augustinian monks of the Maria Eich Monastery are happy to receive prize money of 1,000 euros.

As part of the renovation, modernization and expansion of the old building, great emphasis was placed on ecological aspects despite massive cost increases.

The monastery has, among other things, a solar thermal system, a ventilation system with heat recovery, an ion exchanger for the copper roof and its own cistern.

A flowering meadow was also created in the monastery's inner courtyard.

Three projects were awarded environmental prizes of 750 euros - two of them from the Feodor-Lynen-Gymnasium.

This includes the school garden, where the number of native trees and wild hedges has been significantly increased thanks to the commitment of 6th grade students under the direction of Judith Voit.

The half-hectare school garden now binds 10.8 tons of CO2 every year, the teacher reported.

Teacher Vera Seibel's environmental group also receives 750 euros.

She made detergent from chestnuts in elective classes and sewed bags from old maps, the proceeds of which were donated to charity.

The jury also liked Joel Giebel's balcony, which resembles a small jungle.

The floor and three raised beds are planted with small trees, shrubs, cacti, perennials and herbs.

In addition to the owner, insects and birds also benefit from “edible balcony plants” from March to October.

The Evangelical kindergarten Spielkiste in Martinsried received environmental prizes of 500 euros each for its “research laboratory” and the rearing of painted lady caterpillars, as well as the Planegg volunteer fire department for conserving resources, for example by switching from plastic to aluminum bottles and recycling crown caps .

The Lämmerhirt family’s “Bike for a Year Project” was also honored with 250 euros.

She bought e-bikes to replace her broken car and has covered more than 9,000 kilometers on them.

By the way, the next Planegger Environmental Prize will not take place until 2025, as Peter von Schall-Riaucour announced.

The jury, which currently consists of representatives from the local council and the town hall administration, will then be made up of more experts from the field of environmental protection.
