The Fischbachau firefighters only had to drive a few meters out of the garage during their operation on Sunday afternoon.

The reason: The smoke development took place under their own roof.

Fischbachau

– As the Miesbach police report, a compressed air compressor caught fire.

In this case, the lack of access could actually have prevented something worse from happening, because by quickly extinguishing the fire, the emergency services prevented the fire from spreading to the wooden paneling on the ceiling of the room.

According to the police, it was only slightly covered in soot, so no further damage was caused.

Commander Marinus Gasteiger takes the mission in the fire station with humor.

Especially since it wasn't the first time that the Fischbachau troops had to move into the immediate vicinity.

In May 2022 there was a fire in the wood chip bunker of their commander's sawmill.

The employees - many of them from the fire department themselves - reacted quickly and correctly.

Thick smoke makes it difficult to find the source of the fire

This time it was almost even closer, says Gasteiger.

A neighbor observed heavy smoke around 11:45 a.m. and immediately passed this report on to members of the fire department.

When they arrived at their headquarters, they were greeted by thick, black smoke when they opened the garage doors.

Since they were initially unable to locate the source of the fire, they called the emergency number themselves to be on the safe side.

As soon as the ventilation was a little better, the emergency services saw the compressor that was on fire and immediately extinguished it.

“The equipment was within reach,” says Gasteiger.

Intervention by other forces was therefore unnecessary.

But Gasteiger makes no secret of the fact that things could have turned out completely differently.

The new forest fire tanker, which was only a week old, was also in the vehicle hall.

Yes, the entire house could have burned down - a year before it was to be demolished to make way for a new building.

But the damage is limited to the compressor - and the acrid smell of smoke in all the suits.

“We will have to have them all cleaned one by one,” says the nevertheless relieved commander.

Usability remains

The Miesbach police also conclude their report with a reassuring message for the population: “The Fischbachau fire department is still operational.”
