Carla Hinrichs is one of the most famous faces of the “Last Generation”.

In an interview with fr.de, the activist explains the climate movement's EU plans.

Berlin – For years, the “Last Generation” has drawn attention to themselves and the fight against climate change by disrupting public transport, but sticking to the streets is now over.

The movement wants to make it into the EU Parliament as another political association - not as a party.

According to Carla Hinrichs, there is no need for an image change until the 2024 European elections on June 9th.

“We meet a lot of people who say that although they wouldn't stick themselves on the street, they find our actions and our concerns legitimate.

And ultimately our concern is to bring the resistance into parliament and stir it up a bit,” said Hinrichs in an interview with

“The current party system has absolutely failed to address the acute climate crisis over the last few decades.

We want young people who no longer trust the parties to sign their cross with us,” added the “Last Generation” spokeswoman.

Resistance in the EU Parliament: “Last Generation” wants to usher in the next chapter

You can’t find “shake up parliament, voice of the last generation” – or simply “last generation” for short – on the electoral list yet, but the first hurdle has already been overcome.

Within a few hours of announcing their EU plans, the hoped-for donation amount of 50,000 euros was even exceeded, according to their own statements.

More than 100 supporters have now come forward to collect the 4,500 signatures necessary for approval to vote.

However, Hinrichs does not see the move to Brussels and Strasbourg as a change in strategy, but rather as a natural development.

“We transform in our form of protest.

The world is in this catastrophic situation, for two years we have interrupted and disrupted things, become unignorable - and now, when the climate debate has become an integral part, we are taking the resistance into parliament," said the activist.

“This is not a change, but the next chapter.”

In any case, people will not turn their backs on the streets completely; public protests will continue to occur.

But Carla Hinrichs doesn't want to reveal what exactly the resistance in parliament should look like: "It will of course be a surprise, you just have to be a little creative." They want the elephant "that has been sitting in the room for decades, but from everyone." is ignored” in front of the camera.

Despite all sorts of ideas, previous methods will be abandoned: “I think we’ll leave the glue at home for now,” said Hinrichs.

“Last generation” one day in the state parliament?

Hinrichs is keeping a low profile

Carla Hinrichs is one of the most prominent faces of the “Last Generation”, took part in several talk shows as the group's spokesperson and has already had a discussion with Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) at the last church conference in Nuremberg.

However, Hinrichs will not run as the top candidate - other members of the group, Lina Johnsen and Theodor Schnarr, will take over.

Two people “who can stir things up in parliament with great determination, with a lot of energy and with a lot of resistance in their hearts,” says Hinrichs.

But the 27-year-old is also on the “Last Generation” electoral list; she is one of twelve candidates.

Hinrichs is running in the Bassum constituency and, like her fellow campaigners, her profession is simply stated as “climate gluer” or “climate gluer”.

But what if the climate movement actually makes it into the EU Parliament?

Is the “Last Generation” also targeting one or two German state parliaments in the coming years?

It's a question that Carla Hinrichs doesn't want to answer directly.

The EU project was built within a few weeks and further projects were also planned for the spring.

“But I would initially rule out very, very few things,” she said.
