Sport has a positive effect on health.

Researchers wanted to find out whether the benefits were the same for men and women.

The result is astonishing.

Kassel – When it comes to exercise, there is a gender difference between men and women.

Women have a clear advantage.

They can keep fit more easily than men.

They have to do significantly less exercise than men to reduce their risk of death.

This is what a new US data analysis has shown.

Women can stay fit much more easily - men have to do a lot more sport

To reduce their risk of death, men need to exercise around 300 minutes per week.

For women, 140 minutes is enough.

This is the result of a study published in the

Journal of the American College of Cardiology

.

The team led by Martha Gulati from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles evaluated data from 400,000 people over the period from 1997 to 2019.

  • Men need to train around 5 hours per week

  • For women, just under 2 1/2 hours is enough

“The beauty of this study is the finding that women can get more out of every minute than men during moderate to vigorous activity,” said study co-author Martha Gulati, according to a press release.

“We hope that women take this stimulating idea to heart.” And women would also benefit from 300 minutes per week.

The research team used survey data from the National Health Interview Survey on leisure-time physical activities - such as brisk walking, cycling, aerobics or strength training - as the basis for their study.

The information came from women and men between the ages of 27 and 61.

For women, less exercise is often enough

From this, the scientists calculated to what extent the risk of death decreased through exercise and how many people suffered from cardiovascular diseases such as strokes and heart attacks.

Here is an overview of the most important results of the study:

  • Risk of death

: Regular exercise during leisure time reduces the risk of death for men by around 15 percent and for women by 24 percent - compared to people who did not exercise.

  • Cardiovascular diseases

: reduction through exercise in men 14 percent, in women even 36 percent.

According to the researchers, strength training has this effect on health

According to the study, weight lifting and regular core training to strengthen muscles have positive health benefits: Regular strength training reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in men by 11 percent and in women by 30 percent.

According to the scientists, however, women have to spend less time here in order to reduce their risk of death: If men exercise very intensively for 110 minutes per week, their risk of death fell by 19 percent.

Women reach this value after just 57 minutes of intensive training.

“As expected, for all adults who exercised regularly, the risk of mortality was lower compared to inactivity,” said Susan Cheng, senior author of the study.

Why is there a different effect of sport on men and women?

According to the researchers, several factors could explain the results between the sexes.

Compared to women, men often have larger lung capacity, a larger heart and more lean body mass and a higher proportion of muscle fibers, the researchers explain.

Women could therefore use a higher breathing rate, metabolism and physical effort for the same movement and thereby achieve greater health benefits.

In addition to exercise, there are also foods that are supposed to keep you particularly fit.
