There should be new trees on Kirchheimer Allee.

And a change is also planned for the cycle path.

Local councilor Poing votes for construction work on the cycle path including the planting of new trees.

The new building is scheduled to be completed by 2025 at the latest.

Poing

– Actually, you can only cycle in the direction of travel on the cycle path in the southern part of Kirchheimer Allee.

In practice, however, the path is used by cyclists in both directions.

Now there was a decision.

Protection of cyclists

To protect cyclists, it was said in advance that “pay attention to the right of way” signs should at least be put up on the roads leading into the road – or a new cycle path should be built on the north side.

Theoretically, a dashed line on the road would also be possible.

However, according to the police, this only provides “false security” and is therefore not recommended.

Nature conservation agency examines trees

And it's about the trees on the street.

During an inspection in November, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the district office took a closer look at 56 trees.

According to the authority, the oak trees, which at first glance appear healthy, are in a “disastrous condition”.

The reason is probably that the trees were planted in the bare gravel at the time and were therefore only able to take root on the surface.

This in turn leads to poor vitality and high drought stress in summer.

“I ran to make the district greener and preserve trees.

It sounds like a contradiction when I say get rid of it.” But that’s how it is in this case, emphasized district advisor Alexander Ferres from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

Bare gravel?

The clear disadvantage of clear-cutting is that newly planted trees need up to 15 years to reach the “previously usual height”.

On the other hand, the 56 trees will have to be gradually felled and replaced in the coming years due to their poor condition.

Everything at once would be significantly cheaper than planting each crop individually with soil improvement and an irrigation concept.

Ferres also recommended increasing the distance between the trees so that in the end there would only be 35 trees in the avenue, otherwise the oaks would be in each other's way.

Committee surprised

Such a major intervention surprised the committee.

After all, in December there was only talk of three trees needing to be felled.

When asked for a delay, Mayor Thomas Stark (independent) replied that a decision on the cycle path was needed today, otherwise there would be no funding.

The new building, which takes around four months, costs an estimated 900,000 euros, 500,000 euros of which would come from the funding agency.

If you want to think again, you have to expect a delay of one and a half years.

New bike path

With five votes against, the local council ultimately decided to build the cycle path on the northern side of Kirchheimer Allee, including complete new planting.

Exactly which type of tree and how many will be on the avenue remains unclear for the time being.

However, in order to set a good example, the committee decided that, in combination with compensatory planting, there must ultimately be 56 new trees in Poing.

The new building is scheduled to be completed by 2025 at the latest.
