There are differences between men and women.

When it comes to sport, it is apparently quite big, as a US study has found.

Los Angeles – Women have an advantage when it comes to exercise and health.

Men have to do significantly more exercise to achieve the same positive health effects as women.

This gap is now shown by a US data analysis over a period of almost 20 years.

To reduce the risk of death, men need to do 300 minutes of exercise per week.

For women, 140 minutes is enough.

“The beauty of this study is the finding that women can get more out of every minute than men during moderate to vigorous activity,” said study co-author Martha Gulati, according to a press release.

“We hope that women take this stimulating idea to heart.” And women would also benefit from 300 minutes per week.

Gap between women and men – researchers evaluate data from 400,000 people

The research team led by Martha Gulati from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles (USA) used data from 400,000 people to calculate the extent to which the risk of death in men and women decreased through leisure activities such as brisk walking, aerobics and strength training.

The focus was also on how many fewer people suffered from cardiovascular diseases, such as a stroke and heart attack.

The data from adults between the ages of 27 and 61 were collected over a period from 1997 to 2019 and based on the “National Health Interview Survey”.

Using a questionnaire, people provided information about the type and extent of their sporting activities.

During the almost 20-year study period, almost 40,000 study participants died, including 11,670 from cardiovascular diseases.

Gender difference: Women benefit more quickly from sport than men

Women achieve the same success as men in a shorter time and can also derive greater benefit from it, the researchers conclude.

Other important results of the data analysis:

  • Risk of death

    : Regular exercise during leisure time reduces the risk of death for men by around 15 percent and for women by 24 percent - compared to people who did not exercise.

  • Cardiovascular diseases

    : reduction through exercise in men 14 percent, in women even 36 percent. 

With vigorous aerobic exercise, women achieve the 19 percent risk reduction in 57 minutes per week.

Men have to train for 110 minutes.

This is how good strength training is for women, according to the US study

According to the analysis, strength training is particularly beneficial for women.

Deaths from cardiovascular diseases fell by 30 percent in women and by 11 percent in men.

It doesn't have to be building muscle with weights.

According to the authors of the study, every type of movement was reflected in the data.

“As expected, for all adults who exercised regularly, the risk of mortality was lower compared to inactivity,” said Susan Cheng, senior author of the study.

Why is there such a big difference in health benefits between women and men?

According to the researchers, there are several possible explanations for the gap between men and women in the results.

It has long been known that males across all age groups have measurably higher physical performance than females, the study states.

Men have, among other things, a larger heart, larger lung volumes, larger muscle fibers and lean body mass.

Women could therefore use a higher breathing rate, metabolism and physical effort for the same movement and thereby achieve greater health benefits.

Nutrition is also an important factor in health.

With the right lifestyle, men live 23 years longer and women live 22 years longer.
