The
Ministry of Defense,
headed by Luis Petri, will prohibit the use of
inclusive language
within the portfolio, the Armed Forces and the organizations that depend on them.
In practice, it will mean that
the letter "e" can no longer be used
to refer to possible non-binary interlocutors and, instead, feminine or masculine suffixes must be returned.
In the resolution that will be known this Monday with its publication
in the Official Gazette,
it is established that within the scope of the ministry, "
the Spanish language
must be used , in accordance with the regulations and regulations that govern each respective area,
under the terms and rules established by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE)
and the regulations and manuals in force in the Armed Forces.”
Meanwhile, article 3
explicitly prohibits “the use of so-called 'inclusive language'
, while article 4 warns that failure to comply with the regulations “will be
liable to incur liability
in their respective areas.”
Defense spokespersons confirmed to
Clarín
that the decision that will be announced this Monday aims to leave aside the use of e
as
a suffix and instead opt for the feminine or masculine suffix as appropriate.
For example, the use of the term 'generale'
had become widespread
and could no longer be applied.

Among the recitals, the resolution highlights that in the Defense jurisdiction the use of the regulations and manuals of the Armed Forces in force is mandatory.
At the same time, they emphasize that
communications in the field of National Defense
"must be
brief, clear and concise
in accordance with what is established by the corresponding military regulations."
Therefore, they indicated, "the
precision and rigor that each word
used in military operations must have requires that what is stated by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) and the military regulations for writing and communications in the field of the defense".
In that sense, they stressed that an incorrect interpretation of what was expressed
"can affect the development of operations and generate confusion"
and, therefore, "the correct use of the Spanish language is imposed."

In turn, the Ministry of Defense cited academic reasons for canceling the use of inclusive language in its field.
Among others, they pointed out the recommendation of the
Argentine Academy of Letters
which considered that “a language, a linguistic body, cannot be consciously invented or reinvented overnight.
The letters ayo , which differentiate the gender,
cannot be replaced with
the at sign, the asterisk, the e or the x
because there is a desire to do so against androcentrism or to reflect a sociopolitical reality with it.'"
According to the Argentine Academy of Letters "'the generic masculine or grammatical masculine
is already inclusive
, it already fulfills that function as an unmarked term of gender opposition.'"
Along the same lines, they cited what was stated by the RAE: "The functioning of the linguistic system is not decided by anyone in particular, and is the result of its historical evolution."
