The Peitingen budget for the current year has not yet been decided, but it is unlikely that any major road construction projects will be included this year either.

There is certainly enough need for action.

Peiting - “So many streets have to be renovated, it's overwhelming us”: It's been a while since Peter Ostenrieder raised a warning finger with this sentence.

That was in 2014, he said it during the budget meeting when the then CSU local council opposed the postponement of the Bahnhofstrasse expansion.

Today Ostenrieder is the mayor and the million-dollar Bahnhofstrasse project has long since been completed.

However, not much has changed in the overall situation.

Large road expansion projects have been sought in vain in recent years.

Most recently, Azamstrasse was completely renovated in 2020 for half a million euros.

There is still enough to do.

In Peiting there is a particularly large proportion of old roads that are still not considered to have been built for the first time.

According to the town hall boss, over 50 percent of local connections fall into this category.

They do not meet the technical standards in terms of, for example, substructure, sidewalks, lighting or drainage.

“There are a lot of temporary structures in town,” said Gerhard Habersetzer from the market building authority.

Mayor criticizes the abolition of the road expansion contribution statute

Of course, improving them is an expensive undertaking.

Until 2021, municipalities had the opportunity to allow residents to contribute 90 percent of the costs of such old cases.

In Peiting, however, no use was made of this.

At that time, the local council refrained from “hectic construction work” before the deadline; trouble with the residents would have been inevitable, says Ostenrieder.

However, that doesn't make things any easier for the community - on the contrary.

Ultimately, in these cases, they now have to cover the costly road expansion entirely out of their own pockets.

“This is the reason, not just in Peiting, why road construction is currently being approached very cautiously in many municipalities,” says Ostenrieder.

In addition, since the road expansion contribution statute was abolished in 2018, residents have also been left out of the renovation of streets that have already been developed.

There were repeated discussions in Peiting with the consistent application of the strabs, "but in the end expansion measures could be implemented that you can't really afford if you have to cover everything from the municipal coffers alone," is how Ostenrieder sees the political decision, Abolishing the statutes remains critical.

Especially since the compensation payments promised at the time, with which the Free State wanted to compensate for the lack of income, were limited, as the mayor notes.

Last year, according to treasurer Dörthe Schneider, the flat rate in Peiting's case was around 100,000 euros.

For comparison: on Bahnhofstrasse alone, Strabs would have put over half a million euros into the municipal coffers.

“Roads that are destroyed end up being even worse for us afterwards”

Especially in times of tight budgets, such as those currently prevailing in Peiting, none of these are good conditions for large road construction projects.

This is also reflected in the plans for this year.

The draft budget has earmarked 130,000 euros for ongoing road maintenance, says Habersetzer.

A further 260,000 euros will flow into smaller measures such as the barrier-free conversion of bus stops or the construction of ceilings on Ammergauer Strasse in the transition to the new commercial area.

Of course, the figures have not yet been decided.

The town hall is well aware that in the medium term it cannot just be a matter of repair work.

“Roads that are destroyed become even more of a burden on us afterwards,” says Ostenrieder.

There are several candidates who urgently need action.

Müllerstrasse, for example, has been in the budget planning for years, said the mayor.

In 2027, its expansion, including sewer and pipeline construction, should finally begin.

Cost: around 500,000 euros.

The municipality can count on funding here because the connection is located in the urban development area.

The Bergwerkstrasse has also been an issue for years, as has the Wankstrasse, which is in a “more bad than good condition,” says Ostenrieder.

The same applies to the streets in the area of the so-called “mining houses” (Barbarastraße, Glückaufstraße, Heinrichstraße).

There is no timetable yet as to when it will be their turn.

According to the mayor, this is not only due to the financial situation, but also to the fiber optic expansion, which will run throughout the town until 2028.

“It would be crazy to open up new streets on a large scale,” says Ostenrieder.
