Emilia and Noah defended their top spot in the 2022 hit list. The name Lea / Leah, for example, which falls 9 places to number 17. And the boy's name Ben, which was at number 1 for years, also reached its lowest point in popularity since 2009 at number 9. A total of 138,291 birth reports from hospitals and birthing centers were evaluated between the beginning and December 2, 2023.

The names Noah and Emilia remain the favorites of parents in Germany.

But again this year there were extraordinary names - and three newcomers.

Munich – The most popular baby names among parents in Germany in 2023 are Emilia and Noah.

Emma and Sofia/Sophia as well as Leon and Luca/Luka follow in the other places, as can be seen from a representative ranking by the pregnancy portal babelli.de.

Around 19 percent of all births in Germany were taken into account.

Emilia and Noah thus defended their top spot in the 2022 hit list. By the way, things looked completely different in Bavaria in 2022.

These are the most popular first names in Germany in 2023

In the press release, the portal speaks of three particularly exciting newcomers Liam, Emilio and Amalia and of extraordinary names such as Kylie-Cheyenne, Diamond and Kleopatra.

The name Amalia climbed around 21 places to number 44. Liam and Emilio are continuing their upward trend of recent years and are now at number 5 and 31 respectively. “The name Liam has the potential to become the most popular boy’s name in the coming years” says Patrick Konrad, head of the first name study.

But there are also losers.

The name Lea / Leah, for example, which falls 9 places to number 17.

It is the worst result in the last 15 years.

And the boy's name Ben, which was at number 1 for years, also reached its lowest point in popularity since 2009 at number 9.

    A total of four portal employees created lists with the 200 most popular first names for girls and boys.

    138,291 birth reports from hospitals and birthing centers were evaluated between the beginning of January and December 2, 2023. This corresponds to around 19 percent of all births.
