So far, the AfD has been classified as a “suspected case” of right-wing extremism.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution wants to tighten the classification.
Cologne – So far, only part of the AfD is considered to be “certainly right-wing extremist”, for example several regional associations of the youth organization Junge Alternative in East Germany.
For this purpose, the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia carried out the classification for the respective state AfDs.
But this could soon apply to the entire party.

According to research by the
Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ),
the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has been working for some time to classify the entire AfD as a “secure extremist effort”.
So far, the entire party has only been listed as a so-called suspected case of right-wing extremism.
New AfD report: The Office for the Protection of the Constitution wants to classify the entire AfD as “certainly right-wing extremist”.
According to
SZ
, which refers to internal emails and notes from the intelligence service, a team from the Federal Office has been working on a new report on the AfD for several months.
Accordingly, there has been talk of an “AfD follow-up report 2023” since March 2023 at the latest.
The last one is from spring 2021.
A first draft of the structure was circulated in the authority last April.
The document lists the well-known criticism of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution of racism and authoritarianism in the AfD.
Under the heading “Development of the party since March 2022” it also contains a new point: “Relationship with Russia”.
Court delays new extremism report on AfD
The new report should actually have been ready by now.
According to SZ
information , a corresponding internal agreement was
approved last May by Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution Thomas Haldenwang (CDU) and his deputy Sinan Selen.

The Federal Office just wants to wait for the hearing scheduled for March at the Higher Administrative Court in Münster, where the AfD, which is particularly popular in eastern Germany, sued against its observation.
Internal emails from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution state that the expected “considerations” of the court should be “taken into account as far as possible” in the new report.
The Office for the Protection of the Constitution is still awaiting the outcome of the AfD lawsuit for an expert opinion
According to the SZ,
the Office for the Protection of the Constitution
still wants to be able to react if the court has unexpected, new questions.
However, if everything remains the same and that the judiciary fundamentally agrees with the Office for the Protection of the Constitution - as it did in the first instance before the Cologne Administrative Court in spring 2022 - nothing would stand in the way of the new report.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution neither wanted to confirm nor deny the corresponding report.
“The BfV generally does not take a position on internal work processes within the authorities.
“This does not make any statement as to whether the facts are true or not,” the authority replied to an
SZ
query on Sunday (February 25).
