After two years of war in Ukraine, CDU grandee Thorsten Frei accuses Chancellor Olaf Scholz of a failed foreign policy and says, “The Chancellor’s hesitation and hesitation costs human lives.”

Although Ukraine has withstood the Russian attack for two years, positive news from Kiev is becoming rarer.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyj is dependent on outside help in the Ukraine war.

The Union's first parliamentary manager in the Bundestag, Thorsten Frei (CDU), accuses the federal government and especially Chancellor Scholz of being "usually too late and not energetic enough" when it comes to this kind of help.

Free to war in Ukraine: German arms industry must finally get orders

“We have to understand that we are not spectators of this war, but at least indirectly involved,” says Frei in an interview with

Russia has not only attacked Ukraine, but also the European order of peace and freedom, which is why Germany must support Kiev so that it can win the defensive battle.

From Frei's point of view, the federal government is acting too slowly and doing too little.

“It must be made clear: the Chancellor’s hesitation and hesitation is costing human lives.

I would like to see more determination and consistent action from the federal government.” The domestic arms industry in particular must finally be provided with orders, otherwise it will not produce, said Frei.

CDU throw: Scholz's speech at the turn of the era was not followed by actions

Just a few days after the attack by Vladimir Putin's Russia, Chancellor Scholz announced a "turning point" in a speech to the Bundestag and, to the applause of the Union parliamentary group, launched a 100 billion euro special fund for the Bundeswehr.

Both Ukraine and the German Bundeswehr should benefit from the large financial injection.

CDU politician Frei still believes the decision from back then was correct, but now accuses Scholz of breaking his word.

“Back then, the Chancellor correctly analyzed what was necessary in the military sector.

But the fact is that he did not take these necessary steps in government.

The Chancellor did not keep his promises of February 27, 2022,” said Frei in an interview.

He and the Union accuse the federal government of saying that there has been no substantial improvement in Germany's defense capability and that the defense budget will not be increased in the medium term after the special fund expires.

“The federal government makes policy according to the motto 'after me the flood'.”

CDU politicians: “We shouldn’t make people believe that security comes for free”

Frei argues that security must be the most important state goal and that spending must be cut elsewhere.

"The money is here.

The Russian attack was a turning point and means that priorities have to be reset.

Politicians must say clearly what can no longer be financed in this situation because we have to ensure our security.”

Here too, the CDU's number two in the Bundestag sharply criticized Scholz: “The Chancellor has no idea how he wants to close the financial hole of 30 billion euros in the defense budget from 2028.

Only someone who knows full well that they will no longer have any political responsibility in 2027 makes such a policy.” Frei makes it clear and says that security has its price: “We must not deceive people into believing that security is available for free.”
