Solidarity in the USA: After the death of Alexei Navalny, Joe Biden met his wife and daughter - and then imposed new sanctions on Putin.

San Francisco - It is a symbolic image: Julia Navalnaya in Joe Biden's arm.

Just a few days after her husband's death in a Russian prison camp, the US President promised the widow the full support of the US in the fight against the Russian regime of President Vladimir Putin.

“I had the honor of meeting Alexei Navalny’s wife and daughter,” Biden said.

“He was a man of incredible courage and it is extraordinary to see how his wife and daughter emulate him.” In response to current events, the US President announced further sanctions against Russia.

Meeting after Navalny's death: Joe Biden hugs widow Julia - photos published

Joe Biden's meeting with the wife and daughter of the late Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny took place behind closed doors in San Francisco.

The White House then published two photos on the online service X (formerly Twitter).

In one of the pictures, Biden hugs his widow Julia.

The other picture shows the two together in a conversation, in which daughter Dasha Navalnaya can also be seen.

The death of Navalny, who had been imprisoned in Russia for years, became known on Friday last week.

He died in a penal camp in the Arctic Circle at the age of 47.

The exact cause of death remains unclear as the Russian authorities are preventing the body from being released to the family.

Navalny's death caused international consternation.

Numerous Western politicians as well as Navalny's widow blamed the Russian leadership and President Vladimir Putin for his death.

Because recently there have been new inconsistencies and allegations of cover-ups.

There are suspicions that Navalny may have been killed using an old KGB method.

Moscow rejected the allegations.

Wife Julia and daughter Dasha want to continue Navalny's legacy

Navalny's widow had already announced that she wanted to continue her husband's fight - which earned her derisive comments from the Kremlin.

Just a few hours after her husband's death was announced, she appeared at the Munich Security Conference and threatened Putin with punishment for his actions.

Only then did she fly to her daughter Dasha, who is studying in the USA at Stanford University in California.

Like her mother and father, she is also politically active.

Joe Biden threatens Putin with new sanctions after Navalny's death in a prison camp

Now the US President also stood by her side.

For Biden, credibility is also at stake.

After all, in 2021 he threatened the Russian president with “devastating consequences” if something happened to the imprisoned Navalny in custody.

But now the head of government in the White House has little leverage.

A first way out of the dilemma should be to tighten sanctions again.

The opposition's fight will be kept alive by the people of Russia and around the world, Biden promised.

Exactly what measures were planned remained unclear at first.

But on Thursday (February 22), a few hours before Biden's meeting with the Navalny family, the US Department of Justice opened the hunt for Russian oligarchs.

“The Justice Department is more determined than ever to stop the flow of illicit funds that fuel Putin’s (Russian President Vladimir) war and to hold accountable those who continue to enable it,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said, according to a report the

Kyiv Independent.

Accordingly, the investigative authorities in New York, Atlanta and Florida filed several charges against various oligarchs and confiscated real estate and other assets in the respective districts.

A total of $700 million has been frozen since February 2022, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco confirmed to the newspaper.

“The charges we are announcing today against oligarchs, supporters and money launderers are the next chapter: as long as Russia’s aggression continues, so will our determination to hold its supporters accountable,” she added.
