Eight and a half years after a woman was hit by a car while kissing in a zebra crossing and died, a verdict against the driver is expected.

It's not the first.

Frankfurt/Main - A couple kisses on a zebra crossing, a car speeds towards the two, hits the woman, she dies.

The legal processing of this case from Kriftel in the Main-Taunus district continues this Monday (3:30 p.m.), and a verdict against the driver is likely to be handed down before the Frankfurt regional court.

The defendant is a 34-year-old German who, in September 2015, drove unrestrained toward the kissing couple on a zebra crossing near a traffic circle.

The 41-year-old woman fell under the car and was dragged more than 400 meters.

She died shortly afterwards from her serious injuries.

The man had previously been able to save himself by jumping onto the sidewalk.

Last week, the public prosecutor and co-plaintiffs demanded a life sentence for the defendant for murder with base motives.

It was said that the man acted with an absolute desire to kill and wanted to claim the street for himself.

The defense instead requested a suspended sentence of two years for the 34-year-old.

The man did not drive toward the couple with intent to kill.

The driver was originally charged with manslaughter in the trial, which has been running since mid-February last year.

After a new expert presented his expertise, the presiding judge pointed out last fall that a conviction for murder could now also be considered.

According to the report, the driver should have quickly noticed from his steering movements that the woman was under his car.

Nevertheless, he only stopped after 400 meters.

In the first trial, the defendant was sentenced to five and a half years in prison by the Frankfurt Regional Court in 2018.

However, the Federal Court of Justice overturned the decision and referred it back to another jury chamber.

Because the 34-year-old was never in custody, the files remained lying around for several years.

Detention matters always have priority in court.
