The best natural fiber winter blankets at Stiftung Warentest
In the large test, the foundation distinguishes between two categories: duvets made from natural fibers and models made from synthetic materials.
If you value natural sleeping comfort, you usually have to dig a little deeper into your pockets and should leave the cleaning to a professional.
But then the natural products impress with their wonderful thermal properties and breathability.
A test under real conditions
So that the duvets in the test could be tested fairly and in keeping with everyday life, the testers at Stiftung Warentest came up with something particularly clever: a sleep scenario was simulated in complex tests - with a test subject who did not get tired even after hundreds of blanket tests!
The specially made mannequin made of copper provided real “body heat” with heated wires and thus allowed precise predictions about the thermal performance of the blanket.

Stiftung Warentest investigates: Which material is the best for a winter duvet?
Stiftung Warentest examined several duvets and paid explicit attention to the filling material.
Each material has special properties.
Important for the cold months: A winter blanket should of course keep you warm and transport sweat well to the outside.
These materials are available:
The most well-known filling materials are probably
down and feathers
.
Down has a large volume and is very light.
Winter duvets made of down must be carefully cared for so that they remain fluffy and cozy.
Feathers always return to their original shape.
Since an animal has significantly more feathers than down, duvets with feathers are much cheaper.
Hemp
is for plant lovers and does not contain animal hair or oil.
The material is sustainable because it is renewable, breathable and transports moisture well.
Merino wool
is suitable for all nature lovers.
The wool traps air well and absorbs a lot of water vapor.
Camel hair
is for the exotic among us.
The wool is very heavy and priced in the upper segment.
But camel hair is also considered to be particularly breathable, cuddly and moisture-regulating.
Synthetics
insulate well, are light and ensure a dry sleeping environment.
This filling material is the cheapest in comparison and is made from petroleum.
Lyocell
is also
manufactured industrially and is based on plant fibers such as eucalyptus.
This polyester is breathable and absorbs a lot of moisture.
