A driver hit and fatally injured a woman at a zebra crossing and has now been convicted.

It is the second guilty verdict in the case.

Frankfurt/Main - Because he hit a woman on a zebra crossing with his car and fatally injured her, a man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Frankfurt regional court for murder.

The defendant was not an ice-cold murderer, said the presiding judge in his verdict on Monday.

However, he was indifferent to the woman's death at the time of the crime; this constituted murder.

The case leaves people affected and stunned, said the presiding judge.

According to the indictment, the 34-year-old German drove unrestrained towards a kissing couple on a zebra crossing near a traffic circle in Kriftel in the Main-Taunus district in September 2015.

The car hit the 41-year-old woman, she fell under the car and was dragged for more than 400 meters.

She died shortly afterwards from her serious injuries.

The man was able to save himself by jumping onto the sidewalk.

The public prosecutor and co-plaintiffs had demanded a life sentence for the defendant for murder with base motives.

The defense had requested a suspended sentence of two years for the 34-year-old.

In the first trial, the defendant was sentenced to five and a half years in prison by the Frankfurt Regional Court in 2018.

However, the Federal Court of Justice overturned the decision and referred it back to another jury chamber.
