Hadamar - Gas leaked from a tank on a company premises in Hadamar (Limburg-Weilburg district) on Monday.
Numerous fire and police forces are on site, the police said.
Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed.
Residents within a radius of around 300 meters were asked to leave their homes and seek safety.
Pupils from a primary school were picked up.
According to a spokeswoman for the city of Hadamar, around 60 affected people were in a multi-purpose hall in the afternoon.
According to information from the emergency services, there is no acute risk of explosion in the tank, the spokeswoman said, and measurements are being carried out constantly.
The access roads were closed and regional train 90 traffic on a nearby railway line was stopped.
According to the spokeswoman, the tank has a capacity of around 400 cubic meters.
According to initial findings, there is propane gas in it.
The leak was reported around 11 a.m. and may have been due to a faulty valve.
According to the spokeswoman, the defect may have occurred during maintenance or repair work.
