Hadamar - A gas leak from a tank on a company premises in Hadamar caused a major fire and police operation on Monday.

Residents within a radius of around 300 meters were also asked to leave their apartments and houses and get to safety.

Even beyond this exclusion zone, residents should keep windows and doors closed.

In addition, a primary school was evacuated and the students were picked up, said a city spokeswoman.

Nobody got hurt.

Those affected were accommodated in a multi-purpose hall where around 60 people were staying in the afternoon.

It is possible that there could be additional people who would not be able to return to their apartments or houses after returning from their jobs, said the spokeswoman.

Camp beds are available in case of emergency.

In the early evening, the city wanted to inform the public again about the current situation.

According to the emergency services' assessment, there is no acute risk of explosion in the tank; measurements are being carried out constantly, said the spokeswoman.

The gas is currently escaping in a controlled manner.

A safety engineer from the company, which, among other things, fills gas bottles for households, was on the way to the site.

The company is located in the Niederzeuzheim district, Hadamar is in the Limburg-Weilburg district.

The access roads were closed and regional train 90 traffic on a nearby railway line was stopped.

According to the spokeswoman, the tank has a capacity of around 400 cubic meters.
