Highlights: Huge surprise: Lower Franconia's largest lake filled up faster than expected. Lake Ellertshäuser has now returned to its normal water level at 334.5 meters above zero. “The lake has its usual appearance again, as we know it,” emphasizes the Bad Kissingen water management office. Dragonflies and caddis lava have already settled again and reeds and reed are also growing back on the banks. The 60,000 strictly protected “large pond mussels” were also collected by hand in 2021 and brought to the Vorsee.

Due to construction work, Lake Ellertshäuser had to be completely drained.

After two months the lake is now full again.

Filling went faster than expected – it was actually planned to take a year.

Stadtlauringen – Lower Franconia’s largest reservoir caused a surprise.

In 2021 it had to be drained due to renovation work on the base drain pipe.

On December 13, 2023, the Bad Kissingen Water Management Office finally completed the construction work and began damming.

Now the lake has completely filled with water again - and faster than expected.

“Something like this simply cannot be predicted”: the lake filled up faster than expected

As

Bayerischer Rundfunk

reports, the head of the Bad Kissingen water management office, Birgit Imhof, expected it to take a year to fill.

However, the long, heavy periods of rain over the last few weeks and months have meant that the lake is already completely full again.

“Something like this simply cannot be predicted,” explains Imhof in the BR article.

Lake Ellertshäuser has now returned to its normal water level at 334.5 meters above zero.

“The lake has its usual appearance again, as we know it,” emphasizes Imhof to BR.

Swimmers and water sports enthusiasts can now look forward to using the lake as usual again.

Refishing of almost two tons of fish and 60,000 pond mussels

According to the BR, there are just under two tons of different fish in an offshore lake on Lake Ellertshäuser.

They were relocated as part of the dismissal.

From the beginning of April they should then return to the large lake.

The 60,000 strictly protected “large pond mussels” were also collected by hand in 2021 and brought to the Vorsee.

They are important for natural water filtering, explains Imhof in an interview with BR.

According to Imhof's assessment, the rest of the ecosystem will also regenerate quickly.

Dragonflies and caddis lava have already settled again and reeds and reeds are also growing back on the banks.
