The events took place around 4:15 p.m. while Lenny A. was walking in Luynes prison in Aix-en-Provence.
The victim was shot four times and was hospitalized.
His vital prognosis is not in jeopardy.
Lenny A. has been sitting in the Aix-en-Provence Assize Court since last week alongside two other men.
They are accused of a triple assassination that occurred on April 2, 2016, the bloodiest of the year.
Lenny A. is the brother of a previous victim of score-settling and is suspected of having wanted to avenge his death.
