The Vehicle Technical Verification
(VTV) system
of the City of Buenos Aires recently underwent a reform.
And for that reason, some drivers could have their
next mandatory check
on a
different date than expected
.
In this framework, the first
maturities of 2024
are very close and it seems the ideal time for car owners to confirm
their situation
: whether or not they will have to do the VTV this year;
And if so, what is the
deadline
to avoid fines.
The new regulation, in force since May 2023, had the main objective
of reducing the number of times
neighbors owe for inspections.
For this, Law 6,631 established that new vehicles are now exempt for a longer
period of time
until their first VTV.
Additionally, it allowed cars up
to 8 years old
to be tested
less frequently
than older ones.

The requirements and new costs to renew the VTV in the City of Buenos Aires.
After the modifications, the City's Ministry of Infrastructure detailed to
Clarín
everything that residents should take into account regarding
VTV 2024
.
Who
will have to do it, with what
deadlines
,
where
can they go, what are
the prices
, how
to make an appointment
, what
requirements
are there to pass, what happens in case of rejection...
?
Below is a guide with answers to these and other frequently asked questions.
The VTV has been mandatory since 2016 for cars and motorcycles.

VTV de CABA 2024: after the reform, when should the review be done for the first time?
Cars based in the City of Buenos Aires must now do
their first VTV
when they have turned
4 years old
(previously it was at 3 years old);
or once they reach
60,000 kilometers
, whichever
comes first
.
To calculate the age, the month and year of
patenting
are considered .
Thus, once the fourth year ends - with less than 60,000 km traveled - the vehicle must be taken to a VTV plant in the
corresponding month
according to its license plate.
VTV de CABA: what are the 2024 expirations like and what month do I have according to the patent?
The current expiration schedule determines the
deadlines
to complete the VTV in 2024, according to the number of each patent:
Finished in
2 : until
February
29
.
Finished in
3 : until
March
31
.
Finished in
4 : until
April
30
.
Finished in
5 : until
May
31
.
Finished in
6 : until
June
30
.
Finished in
7 : until
July
31
.
Finished in
8 : until
August
31
.
Finished in
9 : until
September
30
.
Ended in
0 : until
October
31
.
Finished in
1 : until
November
30
.
So, for example, a car that was patented in
February 2020
will be 4 years old in
February 2024
.
So, if your patent ended in
“9”
, you would have until
September 30
, 2024 to make the first VTV.
New CABA VTV: how many months does an approved review now last?
For cars that undergo a VTV without having yet been
7 years old
, and with less than
80,000 kilometers
traveled, the verification is now valid for
24 months
.
Instead of being annual, like before, they can do it
every other year
.
On the other hand, once
the 7th year has passed
or once
80,000 km
have been exceeded (whichever comes first), whoever approves a VTV must carry out the next inspection within the
traditional period of 12 months
.
Now in the first 8 years the VTV is done 3 times and not 6. Photo: Archive.
VTV Buenos Aires: when do you have to renew the wafers prior to the reform?
The 24-month
duration
brought by the reform is only applicable, if applicable, to
new revisions
.
Those who approved their last VTV before
May 4, 2023
must respect the expiration that is read on the wafer and that was set according to the old standard.
This is what the Buenos Aires government clarified: "If you have a VTV in force since before May 2023, you must carry out your
next inspection
according to what the expiration date of your
inspection certificate
indicates ."
"Your
next VTV
within the current regulatory framework can be valid for up to 24 months, if you meet the requirements," they added.
VTV de CABA: how to check the month of your next mandatory review online?
When in doubt about when the next Vehicle Technical Verification is due, on the site suvtv.com.ar/turnos there is an
interactive tool
to consult, under the title "
Do I have to perform the VTV?
".
Enter the
domain (patent), the vehicle's
registration
date
and the
mileage
, tap the "Calculate" button and the answer appears instantly.
VTV de CABA: how far in advance do you have to request your appointment and how to do it?
It is recommended to request the appointment the
month before the due date
, which allows you to find more schedule options and avoid delays.
You have to go to suvtv.com.ar/turnos, complete the form, choose a floor, choose a date and time, and
pay for the reservation
.
VTV de CABA 2024: what will the prices be and who can do it for free?
The cost of the VTV for cars will be $14,130 until the end of February, but as of
March 1
that value increases by 52%: it goes to
$21,477
.
For
motorcycles
, meanwhile, the rate will remain at $5,312 until the last day of February and from March it will be
$8,075
(52% more).
Those who are
exempt
from paying the VTV, if they do it within the established deadlines, are:
Retirees, pensioners
and people over 65 years of age who receive up to
2
minimum retirement benefits.
People with disabilities
.
Owners of
more than one vehicle
(they can do the VTV of just one of them free of charge).

The ABC of VTV de CABA: what is the review like and how long does it take?
The procedure consists of taking the vehicle to one of the
seven authorized inspection plants
, where it is inspected in search of
mechanical problems
capable of causing road accidents and causing
further
pollution .
Typically the review takes around
20 minutes
.
The driver must
stay on board
and follow the instructions of the staff, who will ask him to move forward, backward, accelerate, brake, bring the engine to certain revolutions, turn on the lights and more.
The owner must also show that all seat belts are operational, that the
fire extinguisher
has the current charge, that it carries a first aid kit and beacons, in addition to presenting the mandatory documentation up to date.
Point by point, what is controlled in the VTV of the City of Buenos Aires?

What happens if faults are detected on the VTV?
If everything is in order or there are only simple observations - as happens in
8 out of 10
cases - the vehicle will receive the new wafer and will be able
to continue circulating
for another 12 or 24 months, as appropriate.
On the contrary, if
you do not approve
, the owner is given a period of
60 days
to
fix the damage or missing items
, and do the VTV
again, free of charge
.
Depending on the severity of the problems, the technicians will determine if the person
can circulate until the reverification ("
conditional
" result
, for minor defects);
or if he is
disabled
until they are fixed (result "
rejected
", for serious defects).
Expired VTV: what fines apply in 2024 for driving without up-to-date control?
Every year more than
760 thousand vehicles
pass through the VTV in Capital.
Since 2016, when the procedure became mandatory, more than 4.7 million verifications have already been carried out.
Between October 2023 and January 2024, according to official data,
222,376 vehicles
passed through the plants .
78.8
%
of the exams were
passed
, 10.6% were conditional and 10.6% were rejected.
Those who drive with an
expired VTV
currently risk receiving a
fine of $58,664
.
For their part, those who do have it up to date but circulate
without the wafer
and the
certificate
(both mandatory) may have a penalty of
$14,666
.
