There are over 700 AI-generated news and information sites that operate with little to no human oversight.
They were identified by NewsGuard, the organization that has long assessed the reliability of news sites around the world.
The AI-generated sites are in 15 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Turkish.
They have generic names, such as iBusiness Day, Ireland Top News and Daily Time Update, and churn out dozens of generic articles, on a wide range of topics including politics, technology, entertainment and travel.
They sometimes include false claims, including about political leaders.
Other false claims include celebrity death hoaxes, fabricated events, and articles that present old events as if they just happened.
“In many cases,” Newguard explains, “the revenue model of these sites is programmatic advertising whereby ads are served regardless of the nature or quality of the site. As a result, top brands are unintentionally supporting these sites. Unless brands don't take steps to exclude untrustworthy sites, their ads will continue to appear on these sites, creating an economic incentive for their creation on a large scale."
