The Geretsried City Library is more than just books.

It is developing into a lively meeting place.

Head Hannah Vogel reported to the committee.

Geretsried

– The Geretsried city library is not only a first-class contact point for bookworms, but also a cozy meeting place for young and old.

There were numerous events on Adalbert-Stifter-Straße last year.

In the Committee for Youth, Seniors, Social Affairs, Culture and Sport, head Hannah Vogel looked back on 2023.

Away from the “pure lending location” to the place of residence

“It was the first year without any Corona restrictions,” she reported, emphasizing that the facility is moving away from being a “pure lending place” and becoming a place to stay.

“As a rule, we have 4,000 to 5,000 visitors a month.” In 2023, the facility had a particularly large number of visitors in March and November, because there were some class tours and the nationwide reading day in November.

New registrations have been increasing for years

There was also positive news about new registrations: more and more people want a library card, the numbers have been rising for years - with the exception of the Corona years.

“In 2019 we had 603 new registrations, in 2023 there were 787,” reported Vogel.

Around 2,900 active readers borrow media.

There were a total of 153,427 loans in 2023, of which 22,962 were digital loans.

Children's and young adult books were borrowed the most - there were 46,160 loans in this group.

“This is encouraging in terms of promoting reading,” commented Vogel.

This refers to fiction and sound recordings.

Game console is the hit in the “library of things”

Members of the city library can not only borrow media.

The “Library of Things” opened at the end of 2022.

Vogel also had nothing but positive things to say about it: “We received a lot of good feedback.” The sustainability aspect behind it was particularly highly valued.

The best seller among the “things” is the Nintendo Switch, a games console.

But telescopes, popcorn machines and ukuleles are also in demand.

For example, a boules game was newly purchased.

But the “Library of Things” should not only cover fun and games, as Vogel reported, but also the area of “learning”.

That's why there is an anatomy model.

Also new are learning pens with which you can learn on various topics on the tablet, such as “reading and writing” or “nature”.

Vogel emphasized: “The only way to meaningfully promote reading is through a living library.”

It will be repeated in the fall.
